Key Responsibilities:

  • Inspection and Evaluation: Receive, analyze, and evaluate building plans, including location, design, materials, construction methods, and safety measures. Perform preliminary and ongoing construction inspections of subdivisions, multi-family, and commercial development applications.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure conformity with the State Building Code and other regulations through meticulous field inspections. Oversee safety and erosion control requirements on construction projects.

  • Collaboration and Consultation: Coordinate reviews with other town departments. Provide technical consultation to town departments in specific building construction areas, including electrical, plumbing, heating, and carpentry, to ensure public health and safety.

  • Public Interaction: Confidently interpret code provisions and application procedures to architects, engineers, contractors, and the public. Assist in modifying building plans or taking corrective actions to comply with codes and regulations.

  • Administrative Duties: Allocate work to clerks and secretaries. Prepare schedules for regular inspections of subdivisions and development sites. Maintain documentation on reviews and inspections and prepare supporting statistical and narrative reports.

Additional Duties:

  • Investigate complaints of building code or zoning violations and take corrective actions.

  • Provide technical consultation to town departments and commissions as needed.

  • Assist the supervisor in the inspection and review of major construction projects.

  • Report works accomplishments to the supervisor.


Receives general supervision from the Building Official and the Director of Development.

QUALIFICATIONS PROFILE:

  • Graduation from a Vocational Technical School or completion of an apprenticeship training program in a construction skill, combined with five years of experience in a construction trade.

  • Proficiency in interpreting engineering and architectural drawings and specifications.

  • Strong working knowledge of the building code, as well as related building and zoning ordinances, regulations, and procedures.

  • Ability to clearly explain code and regulatory information to members of the public.

  • Physical capability to inspect construction work in progress.

  • Competence in preparing and presenting written reports.

  • Ability to work in challenging weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.

  • Skill in developing and maintaining records, reports, and logs.

  • Capacity to establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with State and Federal officials, Town officials, public officials, other departments, and agencies.

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to enforce regulations firmly, tactfully, and impartially.

  • The skills and knowledge required would generally be acquired with graduation from a Vocational Technical School or completion of an apprenticeship training program in a construction skill, and five years' experience in a construction trade.
  • Ability to interpret engineering and architectural drawings and specifications. 
  • A strong working knowledge of the building code and related building and zoning ordinances, regulations and procedures. 
  • Ability to explain code and regulatory information to members of the public.
  • Physical ability to inspect construction work in progress.
  • Some ability to prepare and present written reports.
  • Qualifications:

    • Certification as an Assistant Building Official under Section 19-391 of the Connecticut General Statutes.

    • Possession of a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.

    • Graduation from a standard senior high school or GED equivalent.

    • Five (5) years of experience in general construction and related fields. Alternatively, up to two (2) years of experience as an Assistant Building Official or one year as a Provisional Building Official may be substituted for experience in the construction, design, or supervision of building construction.

    • Certification as required by CGS 29-262, with a commitment to stay current with statutorily required continuing education to maintain the license.
