The Town of East Hartford seeks to hire full-time, qualified Maintainer II (Truck Driver) for the Department of Public Works in its Highway Divisions. Positions work in all types of weather conditions. Applicants must have a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL B or higher). The Town of East Hartford does conduct random drug screenings as mandated by the Department of Transportation. Skill testing may be conducted as part of the hiring process.
Transports materials to and from work sites; operates truck in plowing and sanding roads; performs general maintenance work in the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads, bridges, grounds, and facilities.

- Receives oral instructions from Foreman or lead worker, who reviews work in progress.
- Prepares truck and auxiliary equipment.
- Services truck and equipment with fuel, lubricants, and accessories.
- Makes routine safety check before and after operating truck and equipment.
- Observes performance of equipment and reports malfunctions to mechanic.
- Operates dump truck to haul and remove materials; plows and sands roads.
- Operates equipment to mow roadsides, fields, and town grounds; to clear storm drains and to repair or clear roads.
- Uses jack-hammer, chain saws, and hand tools in general maintenance work such as cleaning catch basins and culverts, and clearing roadsides.
- Repairs and installs fences, street signs, guard rails, and roadside equipment.
- Follows standard safety procedures and regulations.
- Reports tasks accomplished verbally to Foreman.
- Assists in the repair and construction of catch basins.
- Performs manual work in the laying of pipe, patching or resurfacing roads, and related construction and maintenance work.
- Routinely performs tasks of maintainers of lower grade.
SUPERVISED BY:
Receives general supervision from the Foreman or lead worker.
Minimum of one year of labor or maintenance experience, including the safe operation of trucks.
Proficient in applying common sense to follow detailed, though straightforward, written or oral instructions.
Capable of solving problems that involve a few concrete variables from standardized situations.
Skilled in safely operating trucks and other motor vehicles.
Able to recognize when vehicle repairs and maintenance are needed.
Capable of lifting and/or carrying objects weighing 25-50 pounds, with occasional requirements for lifting heavier weights.
Proficient in operating equipment that requires manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude.
Able to work in adverse weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, or snow.
Possesses sufficient stamina and good health to perform strenuous physical labor.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE:
- Class II Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
