Deputy Fire Chief
General Description
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate proven leadership through a high level of uniformed experience in the management of fire departments (deputy, captain or lieutenant), offer a record of accomplishments in technical skills, and have outstanding communication skills to develop and retain credibility, respect, and trust within the Department and throughout the community. The successful candidate will have significant operational, in-depth knowledge in fire, rescue and prevention services and a strong understanding of fire-based EMS at the Advanced Life Support level. Candidates should demonstrate the ability to lead and inspire staff, effectively manage projects, initiatives and resources within the confines of an approved annual operating budget and town priorities.
Education and Experience:
- A minimum of ten (10) years of experience as a professional firefighter with a comparable or larger fire-based ALS Ambulance service department. A minimum of four (4) years at a command level such as Lieutenant, Captain, Battalion Chief, Deputy or Assistant Chief or higher is required.
- Valid Massachusetts Driver’s License required.
- Firefighter I/II Pro Board Certification required.
- Fire Officer II Pro Board Certification required.
- Fire Instructor II Pro Board Certification required.
- Massachusetts OEMS EMT – B license required, Paramedic certification is preferred.
- An Associate's degree from an accredited college or university in fire science, management, emergency management, emergency medical services, or public administration is required. A Bachelor’s Degree in the same is preferred.
- Completion of ICS 300: Intermediate ICS required, ICS 400: Advanced ICS preferred.
- Excellent supervisory, mentoring and training skills.
- Outstanding communication skills with the ability to collaborate with internal and external stakeholders.
- Project management experience as it applies to Fire Department programs and activities.
- Fire Department budgeting experience preferred.
