The Town of Elon is excited to announce an opening for a Police Officer! We’re looking for motivated and qualified individuals, preferably with experience, to join our dynamic team. Our department proudly serves a growing, vibrant community of about 12,000 residents across six square miles. Perfectly situated between Raleigh and Greensboro, Elon is known as one of the safest communities in North Carolina. Our department consists of 22 full-time sworn officers, 3 part-time sworn officers, and 1 parking enforcement officer. While the Town of Elon experiences a lower call volume compared to larger cities, our officers handle the full range of criminal activity and face the same challenges found in modern law enforcement. We pride ourselves on building strong, positive relationships within the community and take a holistic approach to crime reduction, emphasizing outreach, education, and enforcement to help keep our town safe.
 
We offer competitive pay with a comprehensive benefits package and incentive bonuses (see additional info section below). The salary range is negotiable for lateral officers with extensive training and on-the-job experience. 
 
General Statement of Duties
Performs law enforcement work in patrolling municipal boundaries, responding to calls for service, and investigations of criminal activity.
  
 Distinguishing Features of the Class
 An employee in this class performs general duty law enforcement work in varied areas of the department. Work includes patrol, investigating traffic accidents, undercover task forces, investigating criminal activity, serving warrants, traffic law enforcement, responding to domestic disputes, and other work applicable to law enforcement. Work may include assignments such as canine (K9) patrol, animal control work, or as a school resource officer in public schools. Employees in this class exercise visible presence in the community to prevent or abate criminal activity. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of a Lieutenant or other senior law enforcement officer or supervisor and is evaluated on the basis of achieving annual performance objectives, effectiveness, visibility, and compliance with standards.

Illustrative Examples of Work
  • Patrols community to engender their trust and support; checks the security of buildings and residences; apprehends and arrests offenders
  • Enforces speed limits by active patrol and monitoring heavy speeding areas for visibility; investigates traffic accidents; uses measurement devices, eye witness accounts, and determines violations to be issued; provides information to insurance companies regarding accidents; verifies vehicle registrations and ensures compliance with inspections laws
  • Conducts pre-tour of duty inspections of vehicle and equipment to ensure readiness with fuel, tire air pressure, and warning sirens and lights and all other support equipment is operational
  • Locates individuals indicted for crimes; serves warrants, summons, and subpoenas
  • Conducts surveillance on individuals, groups, and gangs; collects information for future reference or as evidence for criminal prosecution
  • Conducts criminal investigations by gathering information, processing crime scenes, and interviewing witnesses; testifies in court as required
  • Participates in or leads public relations functions such as job fairs, school presentations and DARE programs, neighborhood watches, and related activities
  • May serve as a canine (K9) officer for locating drugs or other contraband and to apprehend suspects; conduct routine or specialized training of the animal while on duty; maintains health and welfare of animal while off duty but in a paid capacity
  • May serve as a school resource officer in local public schools; educate students, teachers, and parents about law enforcement work; build rapport, trust, and self-esteem of students
  • Responds to domestic situations and recommends solutions to resolve conflicts
  • Performs related work as required
Minimum Education, Training, and Experience Required to Perform Essential Job Functions
Graduation from high school or GED equivalency and some prior experience in law enforcement work are desired.
  
Special Requirements
Valid North Carolina Driver's License; Basic Law Enforcement Certification (BLET) by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission or the ability to obtain it.
 
Physical Requirements
Work in this position is medium work, exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally,/up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Employee must have the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, and perform extensive reading. Employee may be required to use sufficient physical force to subdue or restrain persons including the use of deadly force. The employee is expected to exhibit a high degree of physical fitness to withstand the rigors of law enforcement work. Employee is exposed to inside and outside working conditions. Employee may be exposed to noise which would cause the worker to shout in order to be heard above the ambient noise level. Employee is also exposed to hazards including proximity to moving equipment, atmospheric conditions which may affect the respiratory system, and exposure to blood-borne pathogens, communicable diseases, and bodily harm. Work environment often includes persons with criminal records with little to no respect for law enforcement.

Salary:
  • Salary for applicants who are BLET cadets start at $42,037.30
  • Salary for applicants who possess NC Basic Law Enforcement (BLET) Certification will depend on level of experience. 
** Salary for the highly qualified and experienced applicants is negotiable**

Benefits
The Town offers a comprehensive benefit package. In addition, the town offers tuition reimbursement, longevity pay, merit raises, 8 weeks paid maternity/paternity leave, 40 hour of extra sick and vacation leave at each 5 year anniversary increments (5yr, 10 yr, 15yr, etc.).
Elon Police Officers are eligible for the following additional benefits annual incentives:

Annual Education incentive bonuses – 3%, 4%, 5% (Associates 3%, Bachelor 4%, Masters 5%). The degrees must be relevant to the field of law enforcement to receive the incentive.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of modern law enforcement principles, practices, and procedures
  • Knowledge of human behavior characteristics and effective oral and written communication techniques when interacting with individuals and groups
  • Skill in the use of firearms and other authorized law enforcement equipment
  • Ability to develop a positive public image, display tact and firmness when interacting with criminal suspects or witnesses, apply reasoned and experienced judgment and discretion, and project a positive attitude; ability to take charge of a situation and determine if criminal acts have been committed and apprehend or arrest criminal suspects
  • Ability to establish rapport and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and the general public
  • Ability to express thoughts clearly both orally and in written reports
  • Ability to maintain a physical fitness sufficient to perform law enforcement work

FLSA Status - nonexempt (FLSA 7k exemption) in which overtime is not due unless the employee actually works in excess of 171 hours in a 28-day work period, or 42 hours in a work week
