Description

 

The Town of Erie takes pride in offering high-quality, safe and enriching camp experiences and we are looking for individuals who are ready to join us as Camp Directors! 

 

Camp Erie is a state-licensed camp program for school-aged children and while the bulk of our programming takes place over the summer, we also offer short-term camps during Thanksgiving break, winter break, and spring school breaks.  

 

Under general supervision, the Camp Director will perform a variety of duties including specialized instruction and program supervision for the Town’s State-Licensed programs. This may include the coordination of staff, camp volunteers, and participants in daily activities.  

 

Employees at this level provide specialized instruction and program supervision which may include the coordination of schedules and activities in the assigned area.

     $21.62/hr - $24.32/hr       

Full Range 

$21.62/hr - $27.02/hr 

 

  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  

Camp Duties: 

  • Performs duties associated with instructing or leading State-Licensed childcare programs including program supervision, coordinating schedules and activities 
  • Manages and supervises Camp Leads and Aides while creating a safe, effective and supportive environment for staff 
  • Stays abreast of the latest trends and techniques in areas of expertise. Evaluates program effectiveness and recommends new activities or techniques 
  • Designs, plans, modifies and implements activities for camp participants  
  • Leads and supervises group of participants  
  • Provides exceptional customer service to all participants 
  • Responds to information requests, comments, and complaints 
  • Sets-up and take down required program equipment 
  • Leads indoor and outdoor group & participant activities 
  • Supervises participants during off-site field trips and activities 
  • Provides a welcoming and inclusive environment for a diverse participant population 
  • Gives choices and use positive behavioral supports to address camper behaviors 
  • Conducts headcounts according to an established schedule 
  • Serves as opening & closing staff member for State-Licensed programs 

  

Administrative Duties  

  • Assists in planning program curriculum and conducts individualized or group instruction for camp  
  • Gives frequent feedback and assists in annual staff evaluations  
  • Maintains area, facilities, supplies and equipment to ensure a safe and sanitary environment 
  • Reports any issues or concerns with inventory, facility conditions, policies and incidents to supervisory staff as needed 
  • Maintains frequent communications with other staff, participants, parents and volunteers 
  • Communicates information with staff, Parents and Recreation Coordinator in regards to incidents or behavior issues. Supports participants through behavioral management plans 
  • Attends and participates in staff meetings and trainings 
  • Ensures the safety of guests and program participants by enforcing all rules and policies 

  

Other/Miscellaneous 

  • Responds to emergency situations, administers first aid, CPR or other medical attention as needed, and completes incident reports 
  • May be certified to administer medication per State Licensing regulations 
  • Operates assigned Town-owned vehicles and transports passengers safely, while obeying all applicable traffic laws 
  • Ensure vehicle is ready for use including, but not limited to, obtaining keys, filling with gas, and cleaning vehicle/inspecting upon return 
  • Assists with conducting activities, special events and special projects as required and assigned 
  • Performs other related duties as assigned 

Qualifications


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Must be a minimum of 21 years of age and must successfully pass Criminal Background Check. Must have ONE of the following: 

  • A Bachelor’s, Master’s, or Doctorate degree in one of the following areas: Child development, Psychology, Education, Family and Human Development, Recreation, or Human Services 
  • An Associate’s degree or 60 semester college credits and plus 3 months verifiable full-time or equivalent part-time, paid or volunteer, experience, in the care and supervision of four(4) or more children who are not related to you 
  • 21 months of experience in the care and supervision of 4 or more children over the ages of 4 who are not related to you AND either completion of 6 semester hours of college credit OR 40 hours of training in coursework applicable to school aged children 

  

CERTIFICATES/LICENSES/REGISTRATIONS 

  • CPR, First Aid and AED certification or ability to obtain within three months of employment 
  • State Licensing Compliance Trainings and Certifications  
  • Valid Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record

  • Sex-Offender Registry check  
  • Motor Vehicle Report through DMV   

 

   Upon hire, you will be required to submit your information for more background checks as per State Camp Requirements: 

  • CBI & FBI Background Check, fingerprints required 
  • TRAILs Background Check 

 

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED: 

  

Knowledge of: To perform this job successfully, an individual must demonstrate exceptional leadership and communication skills and must possess expert knowledge of the principles, practices, trends and methods of camp operations and programming in a community setting. Knowledge of guidelines and regulations related to Department, Town, County, State, and Federal policies and procedures also required. 

  

Skills in: Initiative and decision-making; verbal and written communication; supervision, leadership, and interpersonal relationships; strong financial methods of recreational programming; outstanding customer service to a diverse population; administrative functions; time management, meeting deadlines, responding to internal and external requests in a timely manner; the use of standard office equipment, computers, and various software programs; positive and professional working relationships with all Town staff and the community; conflict resolution; handling controversial issues; comprehending instruction, correspondence, and policies and procedures; problem solving; remaining composed in emergency situations and working effectively under stressful circumstances; performing CPR, First Aid, and AED to level of certification. 

  

Environmental Factors: 

Work is performed inside and outside a standard recreational facility environment. Work may involve competing demands, and performing multiple tasks. 

  

Physical Factors: 

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit or stand for extended periods of time and occasionally lift storage boxes and equipment of 20lbs or more.
