What are the responsibilities and job description for the Summer Engineering Field Work Experience position at Town of Essex?
The Town of Essex will be hiring students in the fields of environmental science, civil and/or environmental engineering to work as student interns for the Town of Essex Public Works Department. A work list has been attached describing the duties expected of a student intern. A significant portion of the work is repetitive data collection in the field but there may be opportunities for work on projects involving individual analysis and use of their engineering skills to solve problems. Although the internship does not entail extensive physical requirements, the student intern will be required to be on their feet for extended periods of time.
The Town is looking to hire interns that are going into their sophomore, junior or senior year. The position would begin at the end of the spring semester and last until the start of school in the fall. The salary would be approximately $19.00 per hour; no other benefits are provided, and the employees would have to provide their own transportation. All mileage accumulated during work hours on a personal vehicle will be reimbursed at the current federal rate. The normal work hours are 7:30 A.M. until 4:00 P.M. with a half-hour lunch. All employees are expected to work a 40-hour workweek.
Additionally, the student would have an opportunity to work in a small Public Works office with experienced personnel who have extensive experience as project engineers and managers through local consulting firms and municipal and state government. Everyone works well together; it is a great environment in which to learn more about what the public sector side of the civil engineering/water quality profession has to offer. Over the years, many students have found the work with the Town to be interesting and educationally rewarding.
In order to be considered for a position with the Town, the applicant must provide the following:
1. A cover letter indicating their interest in the position and their contact information.
2. A resume or similar document listing previous work performed, whether or not it is related to civil engineering.
3. A Letter of Recommendation.
If you are a student or know of a student who is interested in working for the Town of Essex this summer, please have them submit the above referenced materials online at https://essexvt.bamboohr.com/careers, via regular mail, or via email at acostandi@essex.org by Friday February 28th, 2025.
