Performs a variety of duties necessary to complete overhead and underground outside plant fiber cable installations for residential and commercial customers. The majority of the work is performed on private property and includes both interior and exterior work.The below list is intended to be illustrative of the responsibilities of the position and not all-encompassing. The Town may change these duties at any time.
- String, blow or lay new and replacement fiber in overhead and underground applications.
- Install conduit and duct systems for fiber service drops.
- Installation, maintenance and testing of aerial outside plant fiber, pole attachment and down guy wire installation.
- Determine the materials, parts, and tools needed for a given job. Load and unload a vehicle with these items.
- Assemble and install fiber cable and associated fiber terminals devices including fiber connectors.
- Excavate, set, backfill, and level fiber hand holes and fiber pedestals.
- Operate a variety of equipment including plows, trenchers, mini bore machines, hydraulic equipment, and hand tools.
- Repair and restore site landscaping and irrigation systems that may have been damaged or disturbed during the installation.
- Install fiber inside the customer’s facility including fishing cabling in walls, installing communication receptacles and mounting optical terminal units.
- Troubleshoot and repair damage to fiber infrastructure including conduit systems, fiber cables, fibers, fiber hand holes, and fiber pedestals.
- Accurately track time and materials associated with a job through the initiation, execution, and closeout of work orders.
- Perform routine maintenance and minor repairs to equipment.
- Knowledge of hot cuts and solid Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) testing.
- Experience in splicing fiber optics.
- Working knowledge of direct termination of fiber-optic connectors including mechanical, anaerobic, epoxy polish, heat-cured as well as pigtail splicing methods.
- Construct, install, and splice in several types of splice enclosures, fiber patch panels, and fiber termination frames using a fusion splicer.
- Troubleshoots all aspects of the fiber network or individual circuits utilizing test equipment such as the OTDR, Power Meter-Light Source, Visible Light Source, and Fiber Finder.
- Climb power poles.
- Basic knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Word, and GIS.
- High school diploma or equivalent (GED)
- Five years of work experience, with at least 2 years experience working in Broadband communications.
- Previous related training or education is desirable
- Complete the first Northwest Lineman College module within the first year of hire
- Complete the second Northwest Lineman College module within the second year of hire.
LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS AND REGISTRATIONS
- Valid Class A Colorado Driver’s License and satisfactory driving record. Out of state candidates must obtain Colorado License within 6 months of hire. Employees with a CDL requirement as part of their job description are subject to random drug screening.

- Ability to perform a significant amount of manual labor required for the installation of fiber cable.
- Must be able to work an on-call work schedule and be able to respond to emergency situations per departmental policy.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor for extended periods of time in all types of
- weather, including:
- Walking and climbing 8 to 10 hours a day, four or five days a week in areas containing various topographical conditions;
- Climbing and operating tools on power poles;
- Lifting, carrying, and loading/unloading heavy items and materials;
- Hand-digging in excavation/backfill work using shovels, picks, and rakes;
- High-level problem-solving skills in determining the optimal installation in varied locations.
- Ability to provide excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, customers and the general public.
- Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.

PAY GRADE: LT150, $67,680.00 - $94,752.00 annual equivalent
