What are the responsibilities and job description for the Licensed Tradesman (HVAC) position at Town of Fairfield?
This classification is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties. Work is performed in accordance with national and local codes and standard trade practices in one of the following trade areas: electrical, plumbing and steamfitting, utilities or heating, and ventilation and refrigeration. Work is performed with limited supervision of the Building Maintenance Supervisor or designee and in accordance with standard trade practices and codes. May lead other tradesmen, lower level and/or seasonal employees as assigned.
- Operates, maintains, repairs, installs, modifies and assembles air conditioning and refrigeration equipment and systems; systems may use Freon or chilled water for air cooling means, and air or water for condenser means
- Determines required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas
- Uses and interprets a psychometric chart
- Controls and measures air flow, room air changes and room pressurizing
- Monitors computerized control systems
- Performs minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks
- Adds water treatment chemicals to boilers
- Installs, modifies, repairs and assembles electrical or pneumatic controls for equipment
- Inspects and repairs steam traps fed by main system at various locations
- Removes pipe insulation materials associated with repair of pipes and fittings using OSHA-approved methods
- May act as a working supervisor for an assigned group of building maintenance personnel
- Performs other related duties as requested, including in similar trade areas and those of lower classifications
- Must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties including snow and ice removal as required.
- May act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
- Considerable knowledge of and ability to utilize standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the particular trade
- Ability to read and comprehend schematics, specifications, blueprints and other technical data
- Knowledge of HVAC systems and controls and ability to connect them to supply lines
- Knowledge of testing equipment (such as airflow meters, humidity recorders, voltmeters and ohmmeters) and ability to handle tools in order to repair and install systems
- Understanding of government regulations regarding the recycling of refrigerants and the proper disposal of fluids and gases
- Ability to evaluate safety standards and hazards for prevention of accidents
- Ability to troubleshoot malfunctioning systems quickly, identify problems, consider solutions, and perform diagnostic tests
- Ability to perform in a courteous and professional manner at all times
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers and superiors
- Ability to express oneself succinctly and professionally, both orally and in writing
- Ability to prepare time and personnel estimates, obtain required materials, and maintains shop records
- Ability to utilize computer software
- Ability to identify continuing education opportunities that enhance knowledge of new technology or trends relevant to the trade industry
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a trade area or any equivalent combination of training and experience
- Minimum 4 years of experience working in the specified trades field
- Some experience supervising subordinate staff and managing various projects
- Required to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or education and certifications including possession and retention of D2 or S2 Unlimited HVAC Journeyperson License and EPA Universal Certification
- Possess a valid Connecticut Driver’s License and a Class B Commercial Driver’s License with air brake endorsement or obtain one within 6 months of hire
- UST A/B Operator License (preferable)
Licensed Tradesman/Building Facility Lead: Assists with oversight of crews and projects; maintains and updates online SDS (Safety Data Sheets) system; maintains and monitors FMX or the CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System) for preventative maintenance, scheduling, reporting, and inventory; maintains and monitors QAlert Service Request System.
