The Town of Falmouth welcomes applications for a Forestry/Tree Care Supervisor to lead the Forestry subdivision of our DPW’s Parks and Forestry Division. This position works full-time year-round, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with substantial opportunities for overtime work. Overtime worked between the hours of midnight and 7 a.m. is compensated at double-time. Under the general direction of the Parks and Forestry Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent, the Forestry/Tree Care Crew Leader plans, directs, and coordinates crews engaged in forestry/tree care work and performs a variety of arboricultural work to manage the Town’s urban forest, open spaces, and rights-of-way. This position identifies tree-related situations in need of attention, determines the appropriate methods and techniques needed to address them, performs that work, and/or leads a crew to complete that work. Examples include necessary trimming, pruning, and felling to eliminate hazards and preserve the beauty of trees on streets, in parks, or on other public property. This position uses hydraulic, truck-mounted bucket hoists and climbing operations to perform the required work. The Town places great emphasis on worksite safety, and the Forestry/Tree Care Supervisor trains the crews on appropriate safety measures, sets up worksite safety zones, and ensures that safety policies and procedures are followed.

The Forestry/Tree Care Crew Leader responds to after-hours emergencies on an overtime basis and operates vehicles and equipment for snow and ice control work as required, both during the regularly scheduled shift as required or as an overtime opportunity. This position also works and leads crews on non-tree-related public works construction and maintenance projects as needed.

Minimum Requirements: High school diploma or equivalent with additional courses and training in arboriculture or a related field; minimum of four (4) years of experience in tree maintenance, public works construction and maintenance projects, and heavy equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience that demonstrates possession of the required knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform the essential functions of the position. Supervisory experience preferred.

Must have a thorough knowledge of the techniques, materials, and practices related to public works construction and maintenance projects, specifically the maintenance of tree trimming and tree treatment methods. Must have a working knowledge of planting, maintenance, and removal of trees or related shade tree work, including the operation of related maintenance equipment such as aerial lift vehicles. Must have a thorough understanding of the Massachusetts Shade Tree Laws, Chapter 87, D.O.T. regulations, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) for roadway safety. Must possess or have the ability to obtain the following licenses/certifications within six (6) months of being hired: MA Class A CDL with air brakes endorsement, 2A Hoisting Engineer License, Pesticide Applicator’s License, OSHA-10 certification, and Electrical Hazards Awareness Program certification.

Applicants must be able to pass a pre-employment physical, drug screen, and background check.

Expected Starting Range: Step 1 ($32.89/hour) - Step 6 ($40.02/hour) with room for advancement along the 9-step scale, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
