Summary
Junior counselors assist senior counselors and other staff members as they plan and oversee activities for program participants. Junior counselors will work under a leader who is in charge of a group of program participants and plans recreation activities for them. The duties and responsibilities can vary depending on the program requirements requested by the senior counselor. This position is responsible for planning specific activities or monitoring a smaller group of participants within the larger group. 35 Hour Work Week
Essential Functions
Maintain and encourage appropriate relationships with participants, staff, parents, and the community. Ability to abide by the goals, objectives, personnel policies, rules and regulations as stated by the program. Assist direction, supervision, and organization of participants.
Responsible for Participants’ Safety- ensuring where the participants’ location are at all times, be cognizant of the participants’ safety and maintain appropriate camper-to-staff ratios while supervising activities. Report the details of any near accidents or incidents, the recurrence of which may be prevented in the future through corrective action.
Responsible for Program Participation- Ensure appropriate participation by each participant in all program events. Provide reasonable options for those who, after careful consideration, request not to participate in a given activity. Lead participants in group program planning, problem solving, and group decision-making. Ensure fairness and diversity in the selection of group activities.
Responsible for Participant Supervision- Supervise your participants at lunch, on trips, busses or any unassigned times when they may be in the counselor’s presence.
Work complimentary with other program counselors to ensure a successful experience for all participants and staff alike. Performs similar or related work as required, directed, or situation dictates. Regular attendance at the workplace is required.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
Must be at least fourteen and older. Desire and ability to work with children outdoors. Ability to relate to one’s peer group. Ability to accept and receive supervision and guidance. Ability to assist group leader in various activities. Has good integrity, patience, and adaptability.
Additional Requirements
First Aid, CPR/AED certification preferred. Training will be offered if non-certified.
Knowledge, Ability and Skill
Thorough knowledge of First Aid, CPR/AED techniques as well as all health and safety regulations. When necessary, confidential information may be disclosed, requiring appropriate judgment and professionalism. Childcare skills and recreational activity planning are preferred.
Ability to be an effective team member who communicates openly, respectfully, and professionally between participants, parents/guardians, staff, and Program Manager.
Supervision
Works under the general direction of the Recreation Director and Senior Recreational Leader.
Work Environment
Work is performed indoors and outdoors. Frequent fieldwork is conducted outdoors with exposure to various weather conditions. Noise levels are consistent with active indoor and outdoor recreation venues.
