BASIC RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Recreation Instructional Assistant, under the supervision of the Recreation Director, is responsible for overseeing and facilitating the Little Rec-kers Preschool Adventure Program. This role includes planning and implementing developmentally appropriate activities that promote the social, emotional, and physical growth of children ages 1.5–5 years old. The Instructional Assistant will develop a daily schedule of activities, organize program materials, and lead activities such as arts and crafts, sensory play, outdoor games, nature walks, and story time.
The Instructional Assistant will supervise children’s daily routines, including handwashing and snack time (with snacks brought from home), and work collaboratively with volunteer program assistants to ensure smooth delivery of activities. This position requires maintaining a safe, clean, and engaging environment while building positive relationships with program participants, volunteers, and parents/guardians.
EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:
Plan, schedule, and lead age-appropriate activities such as outdoor play, arts and crafts, sensory exploration, story time, and nature walks.
Develop a structured daily and weekly schedule of activities and prepare program supplies.
Supervise children during handwashing, snack time, and clean-up routines, fostering independence and healthy habits.
Encourage children’s participation in cleaning up and organizing after activities to promote responsibility.
Lead story times and quiet activities to develop listening and social skills.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe program environment.
Coordinate and supervise volunteer program assistants, providing guidance and support to ensure smooth program delivery.
Meet regularly with Recreation Coordinator and/or other Recreation staff to provide updates on program progress, participant needs, and supply requests.
Communicate effectively and positively with parents/guardians regarding children’s experiences and any concerns.
Represent the Recreation Department professionally, maintaining positive interactions with participants, parents, staff, and the public.
Use discretion when handling confidential information, ensuring privacy for participants and families.
Provide clear and positive direction to program assistants, children, and parents to maintain a supportive and welcoming program environment.
Must be at least 18 years of age. Must be a high school graduate or equivalent. Requires previous experience working with young children and supervising youth recreation activities. Experience working with volunteers is desirable or any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the necessary skills, knowledge, and abilities to perform the work required of this position.

HOURLY RATE: $19.75/hour
WORK SCHEDULE: Up to 19 hours per week
PREVIOUS WORK EXPERIENCE:
Experience working with and/or supervising young children is required. Experience working with volunteers is desirable. Education classes or experience in early childhood programs, recreation, or related fields is recommended.
SPECIAL TRAINING AND SKILLS:
Upon hire, completion of First Aid and CPR certification is required. Candidates must have the ability to plan and lead activities, supervise program participants, and work collaboratively with volunteers and team members. Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills are essential. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and a working phone.
PHYSICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
Work involves walking, sitting, standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods, as well as lifting and moving objects up to 40 pounds. The employee must have a high degree of physical mobility excellent hand-eye coordination and the ability to keep pace with young children.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
