The Front Royal Police Department is seeking to fill an Evidence Technician vacancy. An Evidence Technician performs duties in the Evidence Section of the Police Department, including : the receiving, storing, releasing, and maintaining security of a wide variety of confiscated property, evidence, and vehicles. A major responsibility of the position is to safeguard and maintain the integrity of all evidence and the chain of custody in accordance with State and Federal laws, Town ordinances, and departmental policies and procedures. Applicants must go through an extensive background investigation.
FLSA Status : Non-Exempt

An employee in this position may be called upon to do any or all the following essential duties :
- Receive, process, and file property and evidence coming into the custody of the police department.
- Data entry pertaining to property and evidence submitted to the evidence room.
- Maintain records of and disposal of property and evidence submitted to the department in accordance with State and Federal laws and departmental procedure.
- Ensure proper packaging and storage of property / evidence according to department policy and standards established by the Virginia Department of Forensic Science.
- Determines appropriate and lawful disposition of property; releases property to officers, property owners, the courts and / or other agencies; maintains an accurate accounting of all property transfers and releases.
- Conducts periodic audits of property inventory; corresponds with officers and the general public regarding disposition of property; matches stolen and lost property with property inventory.
- Assist the public with questions relating to property.
- Work closely with department personnel in the processing of evidence / property in the custody of the department.
- Ensure proper filing of Requests for Laboratory Examinations (RFLE).
- Transport evidence to and from the regional labs.
- Frequent court appearances during criminal cases when subpoenaed.
- Maintain strict security and confidentiality of information and processes relating to any property / evidence in the custody of the department.
- Responsible for preserving the critical chain-of-custody of property and evidence.
- Maintain an effective knowledge and understanding of processes relating to unclaimed property and asset forfeiture.
- May be required to assist criminal detectives on crime scenes in the collection and documentation of evidence.
- May be required to cross train with the Records Specialist.
- Perform related tasks as required.
