Performs a variety of manual labor and semi-skilled tasks, light to medium equipment operation and other duties as required within the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. Employees in this class perform a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual labor tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets and related facilities. Work involves driving dump trucks and operating light to medium equipment, pouring, and finishing concrete, installing driveway pipe, pouring, and smoothing asphalt, installing, or replacing signs and painting lines on flat surfaces, cleaning storm drains and catch basins, assisting in minor repair of equipment and vehicles, and operating a variety of tools and equipment. Employees are subject to hazards in streets maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as noise, proximity to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, dusts, mists, fumes, oils, tight quarters, and narrow passageways. Work is performed under regular supervision in accordance with specific instructions and within defined procedures. Work is reviewed while in progress and upon completion for adherence to instructions and established standards.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Performs a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled tasks in maintaining and repairing town streets, sidewalks, storm drainage and related facilities. Operates dump trucks to haul dirt, gravel, and equipment; operates loaders; operates backhoes to load materials; operates leaf truck and vacuum to collect leaves; operates dump truck to push snow or shovels snow from sidewalks or other areas; operates a variety of other vehicles and equipment including, blowers, gator, front end loader, boom truck, tractor, saws, etc. Cuts trees, clears stumps; excavates and grades areas.Prepares asphalt materials for resurfacing and patching.Cleans storm drains and catch basins; assists with installing driveway pipes.Repairs sidewalks.Mows grass in street right of way; edges, trims, and performs other landscape maintenance; applies herbicides; maintains flower beds and other landscaped areas.Picks up trash from town grounds and right of way.Sets up safety cones and signs and may flag traffic around construction sites.Participates on team to erect street signs, paint street markings, and repair and maintain traffic signals.Performs routine equipment and vehicle maintenance and repair for proper operation. May completes work orders with tasks performed. In weather emergencies, perform tasks such as removing snow, ice, or downed trees. Assists in other Public Works functions as needed.Performs related duties as required.

Physical RequirementsMust be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and performing repetitive motions.Must be able to perform very heavy work exerting more than 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or 20 pounds constantly to move objects.Must possess the visual acuity to operate assigned tools and equipment, perform visual inspections, read maps and drawings as needed, distinguish details and differences in quality as well as for safety and read simple records or instructions. Education and ExperienceHigh school diploma preferred, ability to read and write and some experience in concrete or asphalt construction or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Special RequirementPossession of a valid NC driver’s license. Shoring and trenching and confined space certification.
