The Public Works Department for the Town of Garner is seeking an equipment operator to work as part of a team operating the Town’s street sweeper truck in the routine maintenance of Town streets and public right-of-ways. Under general supervision of the Streets Maintenance Supervisor, safely operates motorized street sweeping equipment in the effective, efficient cleaning of Town streets, curbs, gutters, parking lots and public right-of ways; performs semi-skilled to skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work assigned to the streets division; operates maintenance and construction tools and equipment; performs a variety of maintenance tasks relative to assigned area of responsibility in addition to street sweeping.

Examples of Duties:

This position is specific to driving a street sweeper but could include the full range of duties listed below. Employees are expected to perform within the Town of Garner established procedures and guidelines. Employees are expected to be fully aware of the operating procedures and policies within the work unit.

The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Operates street sweeping equipment to clean assigned routes. Operates other related heavy equipment and tools to sweeps streets, gutters, mediums, parking lots and public works yard; transports debris to the transfer station; clears debris from right-of-ways; cleans storm drains and inlets; identifies and reports hazardous conditions; read and understand street maps; plan and route assigned area for efficient sweeping.
  • Operate a variety of other motorized equipment and specialized maintenance equipment.
  • Make minor adjustments on service equipment; maintain tools and equipment in working order. Adjusts and operates brooms, guards, and other related auxiliary equipment; changes brooms as necessary.
  • Inspects sweeper for safety and mechanical defects; checks fuel, fluid levels, air pressure and hydraulic systems; performs preventive maintenance and reports the need for required maintenance; inspects auxiliary equipment for proper operating condition and safety.
  • Washes and cleans sweeper and auxiliary equipment as necessary.
  • Responds to public inquiries in a courteous manner; provides information within the area of assignment including explaining street sweeping operations; resolves complaints in an efficient and timely manner.
  • Remove hazards from the roadway and other public right-of-ways.
  • Respond to materials spills in a safe and timely manner.
  • Maintains a variety of records and reports on street sweeping operations; logs daily reports.
  • Operate office equipment including computers and tablets; utilization of work order system.
  • Perform related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • A valid driver's license and good driving record.
  • Able to exercise sound decision making, comply with workplace safety regulations, and follow written and oral instructions.
  • Possession of a North Carolina Commercial Class B or Class A Driver License with Air Brakes and Tank endorsements, or the ability to obtain one within 12 months of hire.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING ENVIRONMENT:

Environment: Work is performed primarily in an outdoor field environment; travel from site to site; exposure to noise, dust, grease, smoke, fumes, noxious odors, gases, mechanical and electrical hazards, and all types of weather and temperature conditions; work in or around water; exposure to hazardous traffic conditions; work and/or walk on various types of surfaces including slippery or uneven surfaces and rough terrain; work at heights, in confined spaces, and below ground level; incumbents may be required to respond to emergency and public calls after hours including evenings and weekends.

Physical: Primary functions require sufficient physical ability and mobility to work in a field environment; to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods of time; to frequently stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, reach, twist, grasp, and make repetitive hand movement in the performance of daily duties; to climb unusual heights and descend on ladders; to lift, carry, push, and/or pull moderate to heavy amounts of weight; to operate assigned equipment and vehicles; and to verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision: See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing: Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

  • Participation in emergency response activities and support of Town special events is expected.
  • Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • The salary range shown is the hiring range. The starting salary will be determined based on the selected candidate's skills and qualifications.
