General Statement of Duties
A Head Lifeguard is responsible for participating in and providing supervision for Lifeguards monitoring activities at beach waterfront areas and swimming pool, including functioning as a Lifeguard in maintaining order, preventing accidents and rescuing swimmers in distress. Head lifeguard also participates in scheduling of personnel; assigning Lifeguards to duty stations; and giving instructions in pool operating or waterfront procedures, rules, safety practices, maintenance, and related matters. Duties include: conducting continuing reviews of Lifeguard activity; directing the correction of improper practices; checking equipment for possible safety hazards or needed repairs; and coordinating the maintenance and repair of pool/waterfront facilities. Other duties include assumes administrative responsibilities in the absence of the Lifeguard Supervisor, Assistant Pool Manager, Pool Manager or Caretaker.
Qualifications
Individual must be a minimum of 16 years of age.
All Lifeguards must have current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguard Training, Standard First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer.
Lifeguards must be able to pass a practical skills test in the water, and written test.
Individuals must be willing to work weekends and Holidays during the season.
Job Description
Under the immediate supervision of superiors, safeguards bathers, prevents submersion and other accidents by minimizing or eliminating dangerous situations and assist bathers in distress.
Rescues and proficiently performs CPR in cases of asphyxia.
Administers standard first aid; maintains safety equipment and requisition first aid supplies as needed.
Safeguards and regulates the conduct of patrons in order to prevent accidents and drowning.
Stays alert in order to note bathers in distress and process immediately to their rescue and effect resuscitations, if necessary.
Maintains a watchfulness over bathers and avoid prolonged conversation with the public or other distracting influences.
Educates and enforces all bathing safety rules and regulations and Town Beach ordinances.
Performs other similar or related duties as required or assigned.
Checks beach for glassware, sharps, medical waste and floatables.
Perform the maintenance duties required for the safe and healthy operation of the swimming facility.
Fills out and submits to Caretaker, or Lifeguard Supervisor/Pool Manager all necessary reports including rescue, accident or pool log reports.
APPAREL:
Lifeguards will be provided with uniforms that must be worn while on duty. The fanny pack is part of the uniform. It must be stocked and worn while on duty. Lifeguard uniforms must be kept neat and clean.
Supplemental Information
Lifeguards will be expected to act in an alert, efficient, and courteous manner. Sleeping on the job is prohibited. Personnel are prohibited from possessing, consuming or using alcohol and/or controlled substances in the workplace. Personnel are prohibited from being under the influence of alcohol and /or controlled substances in the workplace. Personnel will be subject to pre-employment drug testing that includes testing for THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana). The Town may require an employee to submit to a substance abuse screening test while on duty if there is reasonable cause to believe that the employee is in violation of the Town's alcohol and drug-free workplace policy.
