Perform skilled diagnostic work in the maintenance and repair of the Town's automotive, heavy and light duty vehicles and related equipment. Responsible for diagnosing electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, on-board or vehicle related computer failures, and perform a wide variety of repairs and maintenance work on the Town's vehicles and equipment. Duties may involve some tool and part design or fabrication,
Work is performed under the general supervision of the Shift Supervisor.
Education and Experience:
High School or Trade/ Vocational School graduate plus technical courses in or related to vehicular mechanics, and four (4) years of journeyman experience in Class 1-8 heavy vehicle repair and maintenance, focusing on complex heavy machinery and automotive diesel equipment (e.g., fire trucks including apparatus, construction equipment and construction trucks), associated technical trades or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Work experience must have been obtained within the last 7 years.

Necessary Special Requirements:
Must possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) at time of testing or a CDL Learners Permit with the ability to obtain a Class B CDL within six (6) months of hiring.
Qualifications:
Working technical knowledge of materials, methods, diagnostics, welding, electrical wiring and components, commonly used in the maintenance and repair of heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment and the operation of a maintenance facility.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the vehicular technicians trade.
Skilled in reading and interpreting automotive blueprints, electronic diagrams, and diagnostic equipment, and use of all journeymen level mechanical technician tools and shop equipment.
Skilled in the use of a hand-held computer for diagnostics and of a personal computer and related vehicle maintenance software to record repair function performed.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions
Ability to safely operate maintenance facility mechanical equipment to include lifts, hoists, welding equipment and journeymen's tools; possession of the physical ability required to perform all job functions.
Ability to operate a motor vehicle in the State of Connecticut.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs maintenance and repairs of vehicles, and equipment pertaining to hydraulic systems, air brakes, hydraulic brakes, diesel and gasoline engines, ignition systems, suspension and steering systems, transmissions, electrical and charging systems, welding, and other maintenance task to including Fire Apparatus and Police vehicles and equipment, and all established Preventative Maintenance programs
Performs emergency service calls to disabled vehicles. Mounts and changes tires as needed.
Records vehicle maintenance data on departmental forms and in vehicles software program records as directed, including materials usage.
Performs routine and emergency work using a variety of technical and mechanical trade skills, including rebuilding, reconditioning and welding of all heavy and light duty vehicles and equipment in the Town's fleet, including fire apparatus, police vehicles and equipment.
Maintains work site area in a safe, clean condition; performs other related work as required.
All outside candidates will be required to undertake and successfully pass a pre-employment medical examination, which includes a substance abuse test that includes testing for THC (the psychoactive ingredient in marijuana), given at the Town's expense prior to employment if conditionally offered a part time, full time or safety sensitive position.
