What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Technician position at Town of Hanover, NH?
This position performs technical duties in support of the operations and maintenance of the Town’s water treatment/filtration facility, storage, reservoirs and construction, maintenance and repair of the Town sewer collection and water distribution systems as assigned.
- Assists in the repair, operation, installation, maintenance and servicing of water mains, services, valves, hydrants and appurtenances.
- May be assigned to a DPW utility crew.
- Performs restoration of disturbed areas, including proper asphalt pavement patching, concrete sidewalk repairs and restoration of vegetated areas.
- Assists in locating lines, leaks, valves, and services.
- Performs water service taps
- Inspects work performed by private contractors as necessary.
- Performs minor routine maintenance on equipment and vehicles.
- Installs, maintains, and repairs fire hydrants and assures year round infrastructure access requirements.
- Mows and trims grass around facilities and along fence lines, dam faces and rights of way.
- Maintains safety, warning signs, and traffic control as necessary at all dig sites.
- May assist with treatment facility maintenance and operations including monitoring treatment systems, routine sampling, testing and adjustment of chemical feed systems, as assigned.
- Responds to after-hours emergencies.
- Performs related duties.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain an appropriate state-certified license for water treatment or distribution as appropriate.
- Knowledge of the materials and methods used in the installation, operation and maintenance of water distribution systems.
- Skill in operating a variety of job-related tools, equipment and technology.
- Knowledge of related state and federal regulations, town ordinances and department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of trench safety and other job-related safety protocols and procedures.
- Knowledge of underground utility excavation procedures.

Physical Demands/Work Environment
The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.The work is typically performed in a water treatment plant and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to machinery with moving parts, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
