WHAT WE NEED:
The Town of Harrisburg currently has an employment opportunity in our Public Works Department for a Public Works Maintenance Worker. Employees in this class perform semiskilled and unskilled manual work requiring employees to operate a variety of small to medium maintenance equipment, collection of yard waste and bulk items within the Town limits, snow removal and the repair and maintenance of the Town’s water and wastewater systems, streets, signage and Town responsible grounds including, but not limited to right of-ways, vacant lots and buildings. Work may also involve performing preventative maintenance and minor repairs to assigned equipment. Employees assist crews in other tasks such as repairing water and sewer lines, patching asphalt, repairing concrete, small construction projects, storm water system maintenance and installation and repair of street signs, etc. Employees must be conscious of safety methods to avoid injury to others and self and enforce Town policies regarding size of yard waste loads to remove, types of materials, and exercise discretion in the ability to use equipment safely in tight locations and around traffic or other issues. Employees are subject to hazards of maintenance work including working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as confined spaces, noise, oils, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, and chemicals. Employees are subject to standby and call out during assigned periods and expected to respond to all emergency situations when and if they arise.
DESIREABLE CANDIDATE:
Graduation from high school or equivalent, with a minimum of 1 year of experience in solid waste collections, utilities or general construction; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Must possess a valid NC or SC Driver’s License with a safe driving record and prior to the completion of the six-month introductory period have obtained a NC or SC Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

The salary range is $37,874 - $56,348 and starting salary will be dependent on qualifications and prior experience.
