What are the responsibilities and job description for the Camp Staff / Odyssey Camp Leader position at Town of Herndon, VA?

With Herndon camps you’ll build your resume and your professional skills by gaining experience in leadership, decision-making, and communication. Summer camps are a renowned springboard to progressively responsible full and part-time positions.
DUTIES and REQUIREMENTS:
- Under the direction of the Summer Camp Director and Head Leader will assist with the operation of an eight-week summer recreation program for youths ages 6-12.
- Candidates should be fun loving, energetic, and responsible.
- Counselors should feel confident implementing daily activities such as games, sports, crafts, and special recreation events.
- Must be able to supervise smaller groups during field trip activities offsite.
- Understanding of basic child behavior and a willingness to engage and orient first time campers essential.
- CPR and first aid certifications required prior to start of camp.
- Must work full eight-week camp and one-week staff orientation.
- Must enjoy working with children and demonstrate strong customer service skills.
- Previous experience working in summer camps or with children highly desirable.
HOURS:
- Monday-Friday 40 hours work week during camp sessions
LOCATION:
- Herndon Community Center, 814 Ferndale Avenue

$300 gross (before taxes) (PTF/Seasonal staff only) for staff hired for full day camps (Odyssey, Teen Discovery)
$175 gross (before taxes) (PTF/seasonal staff only) for staff hired for half day camps (Tennis, Sports, Nature)
Benefits:
Registration discount to Herndon Odyssey camp** for age-eligible children of temporary or PTF employees who are working directly to support the summer camp program(s). Including Camp counselors, Head Counselors, Directors and Assistant Directors, Camp Administrator for science, nature, dance, tennis, Odyssey, and Teen Discovery camps. Contracted camp staff not included.
Can apply for up to 2 children*** of the staff member, 25% discount off the resident rate; only during employee’s scheduled work weeks; enrollment maximums apply, pre-registration required. Includes foster, step, natural, custodial children or eligible sibling.
Discount of 25% off resident rate per session = $50 savings plus resident rate benefit.
**Specialty camps are not included (tennis, contracted camps, sports, nature, etc)
