What are the responsibilities and job description for the Utility Equipment Operator I (Sewer) position at Town of Herndon, VA?
The purpose of this position is to perform semi-skilled, manual labor in a variety of construction, repair and maintenance assignments. Position is responsible for, but not limited to assisting with maintenance and repair of the town’s water and sewer infrastructure; water services, valves, fire hydrants, water mains, sewer services, manholes and sewer mains; support other town divisions as required, including emergency services and inclement weather clean-up and system’s repair. Employees in this classification require a 24/7 response to division emergencies.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Conducts water and sewer repairs and maintenance; assists in Closed Circuit TV (CCTV) inspections of sewer lines; assists with cleaning sewer mains using a high pressure jetter combo unit; checks for leaks, installs new water meters; pulls water meters for testing; repairs water valves and fire hydrants; installs fire hydrants; repairs town drinking fountains; paints well houses and fire hydrants; installs sewer lines; assists with maintaining town water tanks.
2. Maintains access to trunk lines and meter stations; repairs and monitors manholes.
3. Operates and repairs a variety of applicable equipment.
4. Checks service flapper valves; checks air quality in confined spaces per permit requirements; performs smoke testing; assists other crews with confined space testing.
5. Assists with marking Miss Utility tickets.
6. Assists with town special events setup and breakdown as needed.
7. Performs snow and ice removal as needed.
8. Performs other duties as required.
- High school diploma or GED required
- Minimum one years’ experience and/or training involving sewer or water system maintenance strongly preferred
- Flagger certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
- Trench safety certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
- Confined space entry certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
- Forklift certification or the ability to obtain within six months of employment
- Valid commercial driver’s license (Class B) with air brakes, with acceptable record or the ability to obtain within nine months of employment

Due to the nature of a government providing services to the public all duties of this position are required to be fulfilled at the designated worksite in the town. No remote work is available.
Salary : $57,510 - $67,500
