NATURE OF WORK:

This is skilled work involving the safe and efficient operation of light, medium, and heavy duty trucks. Performs skilled operation of heavy equipment used in public works, grounds care, cemetery, and forestry activities. Performs operation, maintenance, and repair activities on public buildings, including, but not limited to, painting, cleaning, HVAC, etc. Performs duties related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of public swimming facilities. Participates in the application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers. Supervision is normally received from a supervisor who inspects work in progress and upon completion. Employees of this class may exercise supervision over lower classified employees. Must have the ability to skillfully operate a wide variety of maintenance, construction, grounds care, and forestry type equipment.

EXAMPLES OF WORK*:

· Operates assigned heavy motor equipment in the performance of the particular tasks for which they are assigned. Operates trucks of all sizes, for all types of buildings and grounds related activities, including hauling personnel, equipment, and/or materials. Operates on a regular basis construction and maintenance equipment, including but not limited to, rubber tired or tracked excavators, backhoe-loaders, front-end loaders, skid steer loaders, and wheeled tractors with boom flails, all of a variety of different types, sizes, and manufacturers, along with numerous different specialty attachments. Uses heavy motor equipment in snow and ice removal operations, including truck mounted sand and salt spreader, plow, and wing plow, and equipment such as specialty tractors mounted with plows or snow blowers.

· Operates grounds and forestry related hand tools, heavy equipment, vehicles, and power hand equipment, including but not limited to wood chippers, lawn tractors, mowers and flail mowers, sprayers, chain saws, leaf blowers and leaf vacuums.

· Services equipment and makes field adjustments and repairs; performs related work as required including occasional unskilled and semi-skilled laboring assignments during slack or seasonal periods, and manual work incidental to the operation of assigned equipment

· Performs setup and take down tasks for a variety of events held at public buildings, parks, and other facilities.

· Performs general maintenance activities in public buildings, parks, and facilities, including but not limited to, carpentry, cleaning, plumbing, operating building alarm systems, locksmith work, HVAC monitoring, landscaping, and painting.

· Performs activities related to the proper operation of a public swimming pool and bathing beach. Such activities include, but are not limited to, monitoring of pool chemical levels, sampling for water quality testing, operating pool pumps and filters, and maintaining pool deck areas in a state of good repair.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK:

· Considerable knowledge of, and experience, in, the operation, maintenance and use of heavy motor vehicle equipment including the operation of such equipment over rough, icy, and unstable surfaces.

· Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and regulations governing motor vehicle operations.

· Knowledge of the laws, regulations, licensing requirements, occupational hazards, and safety precautions necessary to safely operate heavy vehicles, construction, and hoisting equipment. Knowledge of the principles of the operations and servicing of trucks and related equipment.

· Knowledge of public pool operations, including understanding of the means and methods of water quality testing, pool chemical application, and pump and filter mechanics.

· Knowledge of landscaping best practices and procedures, including the application of pesticides, herbicides, and/or fertilizers. Knowledge of forestry best practices and procedures and roadside vegetation management, particularly in regards to safe operations of chain saws, wood chippers, and flail mowers.

· Knowledge of general building maintenance activities, including the monitoring and operations of a variety of types of HVAC equipment.

· Knowledge of snow and ice clearing operations, including techniques for plowing roads, sidewalks, and parking lots with front and wing plows, and material spreader settings.

· Possession of physical strength and agility sufficient to do strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions. Ability to work long periods of time during emergency situations.

· Available for night, weekend, and holiday call-outs in response to emergency related events. Available for weekend on-call duty when in possession of applicable licenses.

· Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, co-workers, and the general public. Ability to execute both oral and written instructions.

· Must possess a Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B, with air brake endorsement. A CDL Class A license is preferred.

· Must possess a Massachusetts Hoisting License in the various categories necessary to operate all of the types of equipment used by the Buildings and Grounds Division.

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

· Three (3) years’ experience in the operation and routine maintenance of heavy and medium duty trucks and heavy construction and forestry equipment; high school graduate or GED equivalent, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

· Possession of a Massachusetts Certified Pool Operator certification.

· Possession of a Massachusetts Commercial Applicator (CORE) license.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS:

Employees of this class are distinguished from an Equipment Operator II in that an Equipment Operator III skillfully operates several types of construction and maintenance motor vehicle equipment and is regularly assigned to operate various pieces of heavy motor vehicle equipment.

Pay: $24.79 - $26.85 per hour
