What are the responsibilities and job description for the Program Assistant - Afterschool / Summer Camp position at Town of Huntersville?
Performs a variety of tasks in supervising and leading activities for children and youth programs at the Huntersville Recreation Center. This position works under the supervision of the Recreation Assistant and Recreation Manager.The following duties are those considered most essential to the position. This does not preclude the delegation of other duties considered as necessary by management to successfully complete an assignment or project.
High school diploma or GED. Or a combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, abilities, and skills to complete the essential functions and job responsibilities of this position.
Afterschool program positions require availability Monday – Friday from 2:00pm – 6:00pm. Availability to work full days when school is out of session for teacher workdays preferred. Summer Camp is a 9-week program and positions require availability Monday – Friday from 7:00am – 5:00pm, plus occasional overnight travel. If assigned as bus driver, or in certain counselor positions, must possess or obtain a CDL license.This position’s physical requirements involve medium work exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects, including the human body. Additionally, the following physical abilities may be required: balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, manual dexterity, grasping, handling, hearing, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, talking, visual acuity, and/or walking.
Work has frequent exposure to outdoor weather conditions. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. recreation center).

- Assists Recreation Manager and Recreation Assistant with camp or afterschool programs.
- Organizes rooms and materials before participants arrive each day.
- Plans and lead snack time, group activities, and assists with homework or other activities as needed.
- Actively participates with participants, supervising their conduct, discipline and safety.
- Follows proper check in/out procedures, communicates with parents or guardians at pick up.
- Notifies supervisor of accidents, incidents, disciplinary actions, and other circumstances of concern and fills out necessary forms for documentation as needed.
- May assist with other recreation programs including overnight teen camping trips, sports practices, events, and/or childcare during adult classes.
- Works to ensure responsible safety, care, and supervision of all participants.
- Organizes, prepares, and cleans the recreation center as needed each day before and after program hours.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
