SOLID WASTE FACILITY OPERATOR

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of routine unskilled and semi-skilled manual laboring duties involving the daily operation of the Transfer Station/Recycling Center.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

Works under the direct supervision of the Solid Waste Facility Manager who assigns work, reviews work and provides instructions as necessary. Duties are performed according to established and specified procedures.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED

May exercise general supervision over part-time and/or temporary employees or on an as needed basis.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the listed include all duties that may be found in positions of this class.)

1. Assists with routine operation of the Transfer Station/Recycling Center by separating recyclable materials, loading materials boxes and assisting with bailing and glass crushing operations.

2. Performs general laboring duties in conjunction with normal housekeeping procedures both inside the facility and the adjacent grounds outside.

3. Assists with recyclable loading operations for the transportation to market.

4. Assists with snow removal operations at the Transfer Station/Recycling Center.

5. Loads and unloads heavy objects into trucks.

6. Drives and/or operates vehicles/equipment as necessary.

7. Performs other related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Some knowledge of, and ability to use, tools and equipment associated with recycling operations. Knowledge of types of recyclable materials and proper handling of these materials. Ability to perform normal duties unsupervised or during the supervisor’s absence.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent and have three years work experience in a related field. Must possess a current State of New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services Level III Operator Certification as a minimum. Must possess a valid New Hampshire Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Any combination of education and experience may be substituted.

PHYSICAL EXERTION/ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS

Some physical effort is required in alternately sitting and standing while performing work under generally good conditions. May be regularly required to exert significant physical effort; e.g., lifting and carrying heavy loads. May be required to work under extreme conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.
