Equipment Operator II – Solid Waste- Brush Truck Operator
Performs intermediate skilled work operating dump trucks, medium construction equipment, backhoes, knuckle booms, sanitation trucks or equivalent equipment. This is skilled work in the operation of moderately complex specialized maintenance and construction automotive equipment. The work involves responsibility for the safe and efficient operation of assigned equipment. Employees in this class must have manipulative skill of a higher degree than employees of a lower class, and work in this class differs from that of the lower class of operator in that incumbents must operate heavier, more complex and specialized equipment, and several types of equipment within this category interchangeably. Supervision may be exercised over one or two laborers assigned to garbage or refuse pick up, water distribution or wastewater construction, or may act as crew leader. Work may be performed with considerable independence, but a supervisor will regularly check the work performed for quality, quantity, and safety of operation and care of equipment. EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II

maintenance and construction automotive equipment. The work involves responsibility for the

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
- Operates a rubber tire backhoe and any other light excavation equipment to trench, load
- Operates track hoe to load trucks with materials, or for excavation;
- Operates tractor and trailer;
- Operates knuckle boom loader;
- Operates water tanker/pump truck;
- Operates paving machine;
- Operates Grad all;
- Operates boring machine;
- Instructs lower-level operators in the finer points of operation and servicing of assigned
- Participates in work related to maintenance and construction activities; when the nature
of work does not require constant operation of assigned equipment, employees in this
class participate in general laboring tasks incidental to the job;
- Reports need for maintenance or repair of equipment;
- May operate as crew foreman in the absence of a supervisor;
- Must adhere to all State and Federal guidelines and permit requirements;
- When not working as an Equipment Operator II, works as an Equipment Operator I or
- Performs related tasks as required.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: General knowledge of traffic
laws and other regulations governing automotive equipment operation; general knowledge of
the operating and repair characteristics of heavy automotive and similar construction

equipment; general knowledge of the component parts, operating principles, and maintenance
needs of maintenance and construction equipment; general knowledge of the Town and the
location of water/sewer lines,, including the location and layout of streets and alleys; ability to
service various types of relatively heavy equipment and to make minor running repairs; ability
to understand and carry out oral and written instructions and to prepare required reports; skill in
the operation of moderately complex construction and maintenance equipment; physical
strength and agility sufficient to operate equipment over rough terrain occasionally under
adverse weather conditions.
ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING: Must possess a high school diploma or
GED and some experience in the operation and routine maintenance of trucks, specialized
automotive equipment or related construction equipment; or any equivalent combination of
experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Employees
in this class must possess a valid Tennessee Commercial Driver’s License, up to a Class A.
OTHER REQUISITES: From time to time the incumbent may be assigned special duties by a
superior or, on a temporary basis, may be asked to assist other employees occupying a different
position. Employees in this class may be required to work overtime, weekends, holidays, and
may be in an on-call status from time to time. This job description should not be construed as
