Wastewater Department – LABORER

Salary: Grade 3 – FY25 ($23.51/hr- $30.56/hr 10Step Scale)

Hours: 7AM to 330PM Monday - Friday, 40 Hrs/week, additional hours as needed

Recommended Minimum Qualifications:

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or equivalency; one year’s experience in equipment operation and truck driving or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements:

Possession of a valid Class D, Massachusetts driver’s license, or equivalent.

Ability to obtain a 2A hoisting license within the first year of position; OSHA requirement.

Knowledge, Ability and Skill:

Knowledge: Working knowledge of safety precautions and hazards associated with work in the wastewater industry. Basic knowledge and ability to use hand and power tools.

Ability: Ability to operate light equipment safely; ability to understand and follow oral instructions; ability to work well with others in crew.

Physical Requirements:

Light to heavy physical effort required when performing duties in normal situations. Duties require employee to work exposed wastewater and odors associated with work in the wastewater. Work close to open tanks, access equipment from ladders and enter confined space areas; may be required to sit, climb, bend, crouch and kneel, talk and hear while directing operations and maintenance work. Ability to operate tools in various weather conditions for long periods of time. Occasional lifting of up to 60 lbs. may be required.

Job Environment:

Work is performed under field conditions with exposure to wastewater, toxic conditions and electrical shock, as well as some hazards associated with moving mechanical parts under variable weather conditions. May be required to assist the Facility operators during emergency situations and work nights, weekends, holidays and outside normal workday hours when deemed necessary by the Facility Superintendent.

Operates light trucks and process equipment such as pumps, blowers, and chemical feed equipment, gas monitors, two-way radios, and other tools and equipment.

May be required to participate in snow plowing during snowstorms.

Work may occasionally involve dealing with contractors, public safety officials, and other town departments as well as the general public.

Duties will require a moderate measure of responsibility. Errors could result in adverse public relations, cause damage to persons and property, cause significant delay of services, as well as be costly to correct.

Essential Functions:

Assists with septage receiving, recording times and pH’s of septage loads being dumped.

Operates equipment such as pumps, drills, saws, gates, valves, mixers, and other portable equipment at the Treatment Facility as directed by the Facility operators.

Performs routine maintenance tasks such as painting, raking, mowing grass, sweeping, cleaning, snow shoveling, assisting operators in corrective maintenance on facility equipment, buildings, and sewer lines.

Works by industry, federal, and state safety standards at all times, including participating in trainings onsite, offsite, and electronically.

May be required to work under the Streets, Trees, and Parks Department related to snow removal, as needed for extended hours.

Performs related work as required.
