Hiring Range:
Ocean Lifeguard I - EMR Certified: $19.1427 - $23.928 per hour
Ocean Lifeguard II - EMT Certified: $21.092 - $26.365 per hour

JOB SUMMARY
This is a highly responsible emergency response position responsible for protecting life and property on the Town’s public beach and surrounding waterways. Ocean Lifeguards work in extreme weather conditions observing activities on the public beach to ensure public order and safety, conduct water rescues, and administer first aid as needed. Employees in this position are under the direct supervision of the Marine Safety Supervisor or Senior Lifeguard.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Conscientiously safeguards and supervises swimming, surfing, snorkeling, and other activities in the water and on the beach.
- Conducts water rescue activities and administers first aid as needed.
- Identifies and eliminates safety hazards in assigned area.
- Enforces rules and regulations including Town Ordinances relative to the beach facility.
- Provides information to the public and assists in locating lost person(s).
- Ensures proper maintenance of Marine Safety Headquarters, vehicles, vessels and equipment.
- Provides backup in multiple rescue situations.
- Responsible for securing the Town’s facilities and parks within assigned area.
- Knowledge of the principles and methods of water rescue work and administration of artificial respiration, first aid, and CPR.
- Skill in surf swimming, CPR and first aid.
- Ability to maintain a level of physical conditioning that will ensure the safety of victim and rescuer alike.
- Ability to exercise tact, firmness and good judgment in enforcing all rules and regulations.
- Ability to act quickly and calmly in emergency situations.
- Ability to administer first-aid, emergency medical-aid and CPR when necessary.
- Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, Town officials and the general public.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidate must possess and maintain the following degrees and/or certifications:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- CPR certification for the professional rescuer.
- Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) certification by a nationally recognized provider.
- Lifeguard Training Certification or equivalent.
Previous Ocean Lifeguard experience preferred.
Candidate must pass the following Ocean Lifesaving qualification test:
- Consecutive 1000 yd. ocean swim
- 1000 yd. beach run
- 200 yd. ocean rescue
- 300 yd. ocean paddle
- 500 meter swim over a measured course ten (10) minutes or less. (tested annually)
Candidate must possess adequate vision, hearing, physical ability and stamina to perform the duties of an Ocean Lifeguard as documented by a physician.

- Seminars on local problems and potential hazards.
- Familiarization with emergency procedures.
- Instruction in various types of ocean rescue.
- Instruction in public relations.
- Reading of prepared textbooks relative to the lifesaving profession.
- Instruction in the operation of VHF and Emergency radios.
- Instruction in the operation of emergency equipment and vehicles.
- Advanced medical and rescue training.
Only after successfully completing this training academy will the lifeguard be permitted in the tower unsupervised. Failure to complete the requirements, may result in separation from employment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
A condition of employment is that the incumbent must have and maintain suitable and dependable means of communications/transportation available whereby contacts can be made by management and staff for response to emergencies requiring expeditious corrective action.
Where an emergency impacts the Town of Lantana, all employees are subject to work or return to duty as directed to ensure continuation and restoration of services, maintain safety and fulfill the Town’s responsibility to its citizens. Employee may be required to assist in duties unrelated to regular duties during emergencies.
Employee is subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspension drug testing under FL State Statutes 440 Drug-free workplace program requirements.
This position requires flexible availability that may include weekends and holidays.
