JOB SUMMARY
Under the general supervision of the Chief Water Plant Operator, or designee, the employee in this position performs skilled tasks and duties as related to the operations of a water treatment plant, on any assigned shift(s) in accordance with established procedures and standards. The work is subject to inspections and review on a regular basis by the Chief Water Plant Operator to ensure that required water quality and production standards are being met. This position requires flexible availability that may include nights, weekends, holidays, and up to 16-hour shifts.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

- Controls water treatment plant processes and equipment per established procedures to purify/clarify water for human consumption and industrial/commercial use and to ensure a continuous, adequate supply of potable drinking water meeting federal/state regulations.
- Collects water samples for chemical analysis; makes routine chemical tests of water samples.
- Changes chlorine pumps, records tank volume, and checks for residual chlorine; tests chlorine system and valve operations.
- Operates water filters and maintains proper water level; back washes filters as needed; maintains proper water levels in tank and ground storage tanks.
- Performs a variety of physical and chemical testing to ensure compliance with federal and state regulations for chlorine, pH, iron, conductivity, hardness, or other components; logs test results on daily charts and log sheets.
- Monitors and inspects plant equipment and operations for safety, maintenance and proper process operations; makes adjustments as appropriate; reports faulty equipment or problem situations; conducts periodic inventory counts of equipment, tools, chemicals, and supplies.
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep buildings, vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking/replacing fluids, greasing equipment, replacing parts, washing/cleaning equipment, cleaning work areas, painting building surfaces, maintaining grounds, replacing light bulbs, refilling paper supplies, removing trash from grounds, or emptying trash cans.
- Takes readings from plant operations computer, equipment, and assorted meters/gauges; maintains logs/records of test results, meter readings, chemical applications, and other data.
- Communicates via telephone to provide information and assistance; takes and relays messages; responds to requests for service or assistance.
- Communicates with supervisor, employees, other departments, public safety personnel, contractors, vendors, visitors, the public and other individuals as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, or resolve problems.
- Performs miscellaneous tasks to support department operations, which may include receiving incoming phone calls packages/deliveries, unloading equipment, or delivering and faxing documents to the Health Department.
- Provides assistance or coverage to other employees as needed.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Minimum Requirements and Special Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidate possesses a High School diploma, or equivalent.
Candidate must possess and maintain a valid Florida Department of Environmental Protection License C for Water Treatment Plant Operators and a valid Florida driver’s license.
Vocational/technical training in water treatment plant operations, chemistry, biology, or bacteriology; supplemented by one (1) year previous experience and/or training involving water treatment plant operations and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
A condition of employment is that the incumbent must have and maintain suitable and dependable means of communications available whereby contacts can be made by the Town Manager and management staff for response to emergencies requiring expeditious corrective action.
Where an emergency impacts the Town of Lantana, all employees are subject to work or return to duty as directed to ensure continuation and restoration of services, maintain safety and fulfill the Town’s responsibility to its citizens. Employee may be required to assist in duties unrelated to regular duties during emergencies.
Employee is subject to pre-employment, random, and reasonable suspension drug testing under FL State Statute 440 Drug free workplace program requirements.
Incumbent will be required to carry a cellular phone at all times.

Personal Day - One per fiscal year if hired before Sept 1st of that year. Must be used before the end of the calendar year.
Vacation - Vacation hours for new employees will begin to accrue from your first day and can be used after six months of employment.
Vacation Accruals:
1 - 5 years = 10 days
6 - 8 years = 12 days
9 - 15 years = 15 days
16 or more years = 20 days
Bonus Vacation Days - An employee who does not use sick leave hours for six consecutive months is entitled to one bonus vacation day (8 hours). Bonus vacation days are calculated and earned twice a year on a calendar year basis (July 1st and January 1st of each year).
Sick Leave - Sick leave will be accrued at the rate of .0462 hours for each hour paid up to (40) paid hours per week, equivalent of (1) 8-hour day a month.
Sick Time Conversion - Non-probationary employees shall be permitted to convert to payment up to 40 hours of sick leave each December. An employee’s ability to convert sick hours is reduced by the number of sick hours taken between December 1 and November 30 of the preceding year.
Compensatory Time - All non-exempt employees may accrue compensatory time up to 40 hours. Compensatory time is accrued on the same basis upon which overtime is paid (1 ½) times.
