Position for 2025-2026 School Year. Part time, union position.
NATURE OF WORK:
The School Health Assistant is a trained paraprofessional who supports the professional school nurse in providing health care in the school setting and managing the school health program.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
The School Nurse directly supervises the School Health Assistant; the Administrative Supervisor of the Ledyard Regional VNA supervises the Ledyard school health program, including the School Nurse and/or School Health Assistant as needed.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Reports to supervisor cases of suspected abuse or neglect.
Administers first aid and care to the ill or injured according to School Health Policies and Procedures, including C.P.R. and administration of emergency epinephrine to identified persons if required.
Assists with personal care needs such as toileting, changing clothes, providing nourishment.
Performs screening tests for vision, and hearing and weighs and measures students' weight and height.
Assists with ambulation, transport, and/or escort activities.
Contacts parents or faculty members as directed.
Complies with policies on confidentiality and security of information and records
including all Federal and State laws and regulations governing the privacy of student health information
Conveys or obtains health related information as directed.
Answers telephone, takes messages, makes transportation arrangements for ill or injured.
Updates emergency numbers, makes lists, prepares schedules for screening, records
health information and immunizations on health records or treatment cards, files and/or photocopies records.
Prepares educational health related information for distribution as directed and updates bulletin boards.
Prepares equipment for use by nurse.
Inventories supplies and materials, and prepares supply order list.
Maintains orderliness and cleanliness of school health room, supplies, and equipment.
- Adheres to infection control policies and procedures .
- Utilizes personnel protective measures in accordance with policy and procedure.
- Participates in quality assurance program and improvement activities as indicated.
- Adheres to LRVNA's Risk Management Policy.
- Attends designated meetings and training sessions.
- Presents a neat professional appearance.

Additional Requirements
· Requires a post-offer/pre-employment physical examination (within the past six months) which shall include a statement from the physician that the employee is capable of fulfilling the requirements of the job and is free of signs and symptoms or evidence of disease that could be expected to be transmitted during the course of the employee's work-related activities at the time of the physical examination.
- Proof of measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) immunity if born after 1957, and TB (PPD) testing.
- Physical and psychological examinations as may be required during employment. Drug screening both pre-employment and as may be required during employment.
- Criminal background, fingerprinting and driving record checks are required prior to employment.
- Means of transportation and means of contact.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to: hear, speak, stand, walk, bend, twist, stoop, kneel or crouch, climb stairs to various levels, use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects or instruments, use wrists for repetitive motion, reach with hands and arms, and tolerate exposure to environmental allergens. The employee may occasionally lift or move up to fifty (50) pounds and move at a quickened pace. Must maintain continuous visual acuity including close vision and the ability to adjust focus, and possess normal auditory ability to perform basic screening tests.
Employee must be free from mental or physical disorders which would interfere with performance of duties as described, and must have the ability to maintain his/her composure with the public and coworkers in every day stressful and emergency situations. Employee may occasionally have to function in situations where subjected to aggressive physical and/or verbal behavior.
LICENSE OR CERTIFICATION:
- Community CPR/ AED
- Current first aid certificate
- Training to administer Epi-Pen by qualified instructor.
