Performs responsible protective service work in fire suppression, emergency medical service and rescue operations. Work is often is performed under emergency conditions and frequently involves considerable personal hazard. Work is performed under the direct supervision of a company officer.
- Responds to alarms and assists in the suppression of fires, including rescue, entry, ventilating and salvage work; enters structures, searches for and rescues occupants, conducts ventilation and salvage work.
- Responds to emergency medical calls and serves as a first responder to render aid and/or assist other emergency medical services personnel.
- Performs cleanup and overhaul work after fires.
- Assists in maintaining fire apparatus and equipment, and cleaning fire station and grounds.
- Checks, tests and maintains fire hydrants; maintains appropriate maintenance and inspection records.
- Participates in continuing training and instruction program by individual study of technical material and attendance at scheduled drills and classes.
- Responds to vehicle accidents and performs extrication duties as needed.
- Assists with pre-incident surveys and planning.
- Assists with conducting residential and commercial fire prevention inspections.
- Performs home safety inspections and fire hydrant tests.
- Conducts fire prevention classes for groups, schools and the public.
- Responds to hazardous materials spills.
- Inventories equipment, uniforms, and emergency stock, etc. orders cleaning supplies.
- Installs child safety seats as a public service.
- Serves as an equipment operator in the absence of the engineer/master firefighter.
- Performs related tasks as required.
Thorough knowledge of firefighting techniques and procedures as applied to fire suppression; general knowledge of fire prevention strategies and techniques; thorough knowledge of emergency medical techniques and procedures; ability to learn technical firefighting principles and techniques, and principles of hydraulics applied to fire suppression; thorough knowledge of the street system and physical layout of the Town and County; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; ability to keep simple records and prepare reports; mechanical aptitude; physical endurance and agility; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public; Ability to determine the accuracy and thoroughness of work.
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school with some experience in firefighting preferred.
- Possession of a valid North Carolina Class B driver’s license.
- Requires drug test, background check, and motor vehicle record check prior to employment.
- Motor vehicle record check required throughout employment; must be able to meet Town driving requirements at all times.
- NC Firefighter Certification, Hazmat Ops plus
- NC EMT
- NIMS 100, 200, 700 & 800
- Technical Rescuer: General & VMR.
Salary : $52,605 - $84,168
