Job Summary:
The Town of Mount Jackson invites applications for a part-time Parks & Recreation Manager position. This role will create meaningful experiences through public spaces, activities, events and programing for the community by working closely with residents, community organizations, and town leadership to foster positive community engagement. We are seeking an enthusiastic individual who will have a combination of leadership, administrative and interpersonal skills to support and assist the Town as we advance into our Master Park Plan and other community initiatives.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
- Willingness to partner and participate with town staff to support other Mount Jackson initiatives, activities, events, and programs that benefit our community
- Engage with local organizations and citizens to promote quality of life for community members by providing access to nature, promoting healthy lifestyles, and creating opportunities for recreation for our community
- Plan, organize, and coordinate recreational programs and events for all age groups and abilities
- Create and recreational programs and events through social media, flyers, and local outreach
- Monitor program participation, assess feedback and implement improvements when needed
- Assist in development of the annual budget, including forecasting needs for programing and maintenance supplies
- Seek out and apply for grant opportunities for enhancing green spaces or equipment
- Collaborate with the Public Works Director or contracted services to ensure the cleanliness, safety, and upkeep of areas and facilities
- Perform routine inspections of parks and recreational areas to identify maintenance needs, and safety hazards
- Manages and supports the seasonal aquatic manager
- Coordinates efforts for recruitment, training, and scheduling of volunteers and seasonal staff
Required Skills/Abilities:
- Ability to work up to 29hrs a week
- Year-round role but flexing hours towards certain times of the year when needed
- Schedule is flexible; includes evenings and weekends, depending on programing and/or events
- Ability to perform outdoor work in varying weather conditions
- Ability to travel for occasional training and activities
- Ability to work independently, exercise initiative and autonomous judgement
- Ability to interface effectively with all levels of staff and town leadership
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within the community
- Skill in using computers (standard office software)
- Ability to communicate effectively and correctly both orally and in writing
- Dependable, flexible, and dedicated to providing excellent customer service
- Reliable attendance is necessary
- Willingness to obtain a Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification (CPSI)
- Willingness to obtain the National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) membership
- Willingness to obtain a Certified Pool Operator certification
- Willingness to obtain CPR/First Aid certification
Supervisory Responsibilities:
Supervises the seasonal aquatics manager and coordinates their schedule and training
Physical Demands:
Tasks may include moderate physical effort including lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of carts, materials and other items weighing up to 50 pounds. Work regularly requires speaking or hearing and using hands to grip, handle or feel. Work requires frequent standing, walking, stooping, kneeling crouching, sitting, or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken levels; work has some exposure to environmental conditions and is performed outside.
Education and Experience:
- High school diploma or GED required
- Valid driver’s license required
- Experience in recreation and/or aquatics facilities management a plus
- Experience with social media platforms, Google and Canva
- Public service and/or other experience may be considered in lieu of higher education
- Experience with grant writing a plus
- Certified Playground Safety Inspector Certification (CPSI) a plus
- National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) membership a plus
- Certified Pool Operator certification a plus
- CPR/First Aid Certification a plus
- A background check and drug screening of a successful candidate will be performed
