JOB TITLE: Water Safety Instructor (WSI)JOB SUMMARYThe Water Safety Instructor provides instruction to swimmers of all levels, including non-swimmers, in the appropriate levels designated by Starfish Aquatics, under general supervision of the Aquatics Coordinator/Recreation Specialist.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:• Enforces pool regulations;• Advises the public on various aquatics activities as well as pool rules and regulations;• Provides effective swimming instructions to teach courses, as required by Starfish Aquatics, for all levels of swimming instruction;• Follows written lesson plans approved by management;• Oversees pool area to prevent accidents and ensure the safety of all swimmers;• Completes all records and reports required by the Aquatics Coordinator;• Advises supervisor on problem areas and concerns;• CPR/First Aid certification required and obtained within 3 months of employment;• Performs other related assigned duties.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:• Swim Instructor certification (with any nationally recognized agency) required;• Darkness to Light training/certification within 3 months of employment and maintain current certification throughout employment;• Swimming and aquatic background and 3 years of experience preferred;
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:• Knowledge of the rules, regulations, and procedures to ensure a safe pool facility;• Skill in the ability to instruct students of all ages and all levels of swimming ability;• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing;• Ability to read and write at 11th grade level;• Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing;• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with supervisors, co-workers, and citizens;• Ability to remain calm and decisive in emergency situations.• Ability to administer First Aid and CPR for infants, children and adults;• Skill in the application of safety and lifesaving procedures;• Ability to follow instructions effectively and to work with minimal supervision in a responsible manner;• Ability to readily accept directions from those in a supervisory capacity;• Ability to accept constructive feedback and to project good public relations;• Ability to prepare neat, detailed, and concise written reports, when required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:The work requires some agility and physical strength, such as moving in or about recreation sites, or standing or walking most of the work period. There may be need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials. Usually, the work will require extended physical effort over a significant portion of the workday.While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, usage of computers and reading.The employee consistently maintains balance either sitting, standing or walking and is occasionally required to stoop or crouch. The employee will frequently push, pull or lift and move objects up to15 pounds.
