The Town’s nursing facility, Our Island Home, seeks a Per Diem Certified Nursing Assistant to provide personal care to residents of Our Island Home in a dignified, caring, safe, and efficient manner.

 

Requirements: the best candidate must have a High school diploma or GED equivalent. Completion of an accredited nursing assistant education/training program approved by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts providing an active license in good standing with the Massachusetts Nurse Aide Registry. Must have a current Adult CPR/AED Certification. Must be able to lift and/or move objects of no less than 50 pounds. More intensive physical effort may be necessary to assist with residents when needed. Requires frequent heavy lifting. Involves standing, sitting and/or walking for the greater portion of the workday. Mental and physical fitness is required for completing the tasks involved in the position. Basic communication skills in English. Prior experience in a Long-Term Care nursing home preferred.

 

Per Diem. Non-Union. $24.00 per hour.

Statement of Duties: The Certified Nursing Assistant is responsible for providing personal care to residents of Our Island Home in a dignified, caring, safe and efficient manner

Supervision Required: Under the general supervision of the Charge Nurse, the employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. The supervisor provides additional, specific instruction for new, difficult or unusual assignments, including suggested work methods. The employee is expected to recognize instances which are out of the ordinary and which do not fall within existing instructions; the employee is then expected to seek advice and further instructions. Reviews and checks of the employee’s work are applied to an extent sufficient to keep the supervisor aware of progress, and to ensure that completed work and methods used are technically accurate and that instructions are being followed.

Supervisory Responsibility: Employee does not have any regular supervisory responsibilities.

Confidentiality: In accordance with the State Public Records law and HIPAA regulations, the employee has regular access to confidential information of the department such as client records.

Accountability: Consequences of errors, missed deadlines or poor judgment may include adverse patient relations, personal injury, danger to client and self-safety and health, legal repercussions and significant time loss caused by back checking by others and slowdowns in the processing of the work.

Judgment: Numerous standardized practices, procedures or general instructions govern the work performed and in some case, may require additional interpretation. Judgment is needed to locate, select and apply the most pertinent practice or procedure, regulation or guideline.     

Complexity: The work consists of a variety of duties which generally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations or guidelines. The sequence of work and/or the procedures followed vary according to the nature of the transaction and/or the information involved, or sought, in a particular situation.

Work Environment: The work environment involves everyday discomforts typical of Nursing Home Facilities, with occasional exposure to outside elements and biohazards. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant. Often required to work beyond normal business hours.

Nature and Purpose of Public Contact: Relationships are with co-workers incidental to the purpose of the work involving giving and receiving factual information about the work. Ordinary courtesy and tact are required. Contacts with the public may be required on an occasional basis.

Occupational Risk: Duties regularly present potential risk of injuries from improper exposure that could result in loss of time from work. Examples of injury include bruises from falls, cuts or burns, or muscular strains from lifting or carrying patients or materials. Personal injury could occur through employee failure to properly follow safety precautions and procedures. Special safety precautions, training, or protective clothing such as gowns, gloves or coats required due to biohazardous material exposure.

  • Assists residents with dressing/undressing and maintaining appropriate clothing; grooming to maintain an appropriate appearance; bathing and maintaining cleanliness of all body areas.
  • Assists residents with toileting/elimination needs based on individualized care plan.
  • Assists residents with meals and dietary requirements based on the residents’ individualized care plan.
  • Assists residents in transferring, repositioning and walking based on individualized care plan.
  • Assists with residents Psychosocial and Spiritual Care by accommodating their needs and responding appropriately to residents’ verbal/non-verbal expressions.
  • Keeps residents’ living areas pleasant and orderly. May be required to assist in the cleaning or sanitizing of resident items and equipments.
  • Assures resident’s rights are protected.
  • Performs rounds during assigned shift(s).
  • Documents all care provided on the appropriate worksheets and ensures they are accurate and comprehensive to the care provided during the period.
  • Responds appropriately to residents’ requests for help and maintains positive relationships with residents’ friends and family members. Provides residents with the opportunity for independence and choice in their daily lives. Ensures residents and family are part of the care process.
  • Responds promptly to residents’ call lights.
  • Receives and appropriately shares information; observes and reports on resident’s conditions or changes to appropriate staff in a prompt manner.
  • Attends all facility meetings as required (ex. care plan, safety, departmental, etc.)
  • Maintains safe work practices and follows facility safety procedures.
  • Follows facility infection control procedures and demonstrates best practice in hand washing/gloving procedures.
  • Meets facility hygiene and dress code standards of appearance.
  • Follows facility conduct standards and policies and procedures performing all work alcohol and drug free.
  • Maintains all required licenses, certifications, qualifications and associated standards.
  • Meets requirements for in-service education and meeting attendance per facility policy and state and federal requirements.
  • Maintains appropriate attendance records; arrives on time for work and is ready to perform assigned tasks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned in accordance with job functions.

Education and Experience: Must be a High School graduate or GED equivalent with completion of an accredited nursing assistant education/training program or ability to successfully complete an accredited program approved by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts providing an active license in good standing with the Massachusetts Nurse Aide Registryone to three (1-3) years prior work experience preferredor any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.            

            

Special Requirements: CPR/AED Certification. MA Certified Nursing Assistant certification. Pass all required background checks.

 

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill


Knowledge: Knowledge of nursing home long term care rules and regulations as well as operating procedures. Knowledge of nursing home procedures, infection control, proper hygiene and safe work practices, ethics, HIPAA and scope of practice skills.

 

Abilities: Ability to perform multiple tasks and maintain confidential information. Interest in working with the elderly. Works with others in a helpful, respectful, and courteous manner; must be able to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with co-workers, supervisors and residents/family members. Able to work in an interdisciplinary team environment.

 

Skills: Good organization and time management skills necessary; some skill at operating standard type of office equipment including, but not limited to computers, copy machine, fax machine, printers and telephone; proficient written and oral communication skills; and effective customer service skills. Skill to operate standard nursing home equipment (ex. patient care lifts, beds, DME, weight scales, etc.).

Physical Demands: Work requires moderate intermitted physical strength and effort daily. Lifting, loading, pulling or pushing heavy object, standing or walking for the full workday. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50lbs. Work requires lifting, carrying, moving and handling violent Resident. There may be a need to stretch and reach to retrieve materials. Usually, the work will require extended physical effort over a significant portion of the workday.

 

Motor Skills: Duties may involve assignments requiring application of hand and eye coordination with finger dexterity and motor coordination. Examples include operating lifts and DME.

 

Visual Demands: Position requires the routine reading of documents and reports for understanding and analytical purposes with a need for color vision.

Salary : $54,101 - $68,515
