Nantucket Culture & Tourism/ Visitor Services seeks Information Aides to assist with greeting customers, distributing maps, guidebooks and other resources, and answering phone inquiries this summer season. The ability to operate office equipment including telephones, computers and copiers is essential. Candidates must demonstrate a detailed knowledge of Nantucket and enjoy working with people in a fast-paced environment.
$20.00 per hour.
Please note that the advertised hourly pay rate may increase by $2 per hour, pending approval at the Annual Town Meeting.

Under the direction of the Director of Culture & Tourism, or their designee, the Information Aide is responsible for greeting customers, answering public questions, and distributing promotional materials on behalf of the department at its Visitor Services offices and satellite stations.
Supervision Required:
Under the general supervision of the Culture & Tourism Director, or their designee, the employee is familiar with the work routine and uses initiative in carrying out recurring assignments independently with specific instruction. Supervisor reviews work to remain aware of progress, work methods, and technical accuracy.
Supervisory Responsibility:
The employee, as a regular part of the job, is not required to supervise other Town employees.
Confidentiality:
The employee does not have regular access to confidential information in accordance with the State Public Records Law such as department records.
Accountability:
Consequences of errors, missed deadlines, or poor judgment may include adverse public relations and legal repercussions.
Judgment:
Numerous standardized practices, procedures or general instructions govern the work performed and, in some cases, may require additional interpretation. Independent judgment is needed to facilitate exceptional customer service with the general public and maintain confidentiality.
Complexity:
The work consists of a variety of duties which generally follow standardized practices, procedures, regulations, or guidelines.
Work Environment:
The work environment involves everyday office settings and is subject to frequent interruptions. Noise or physical surroundings may be distracting, but conditions are generally not unpleasant.
Nature and Purpose of Public Contact:
Relationships with co-workers and the public involve frequent explanation, discussion or interpretation of practices, procedures, regulations, or guidelines in order to render services, plan or coordinate work efforts, or resolve operating problems. Other regular contacts are with service recipients. More than ordinary courtesy, tact, and diplomacy may be required to respond to requests for information or to deal with uncooperative or uninformed persons.
Occupational Risk:
Risk exposure to the employee is similar to that found in a standard office setting.
Essential Functions:

- Respond to a variety of requests and inquiries about the island from the general public both in person and via email/telephone
- Able to greet 350-500 people per day in season
- Assist visitors with day-of lodging placement
- Able to use office equipment including telephones, computers, and copiers
- Assist year-round staff with general clerical duties
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
Recommended Minimum Qualifications:
Previous experience in a similar role or customer-facing position is a plus but not mandatory.
Education and Experience: No prior experience necessary; on-the-job training provided.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skill:
Knowledge: Awareness of municipal services and local government structure (training will be provided). Familiarity with common office equipment (e.g., phones, printers and copiers). Basic understanding of office procedures and customer service principles.
Abilities: Ability to listen actively and respond appropriately to questions or concerns from the public. Ability to follow instructions and carry out tasks with minimal supervision. Ability to remain calm and professional in high-pressure or fast-paced situations. Ability to learn and retain information about department services, policies and procedures. Willingness to learn new tasks and take directions from supervisors.
Skills: Proficient in verbal and written communication, with the ability to convey information clearly and courteously. Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) and internet browsers. Strong interpersonal skills, with a focus on customer service and courteous public, co-worker and supervisor interaction. Effective organizational and time-management skills, with attention to detail.
