What are the responsibilities and job description for the Day Camp Counselor position at Town of Normal?
Distinguishing Features of Work:
The Day Camp Counselor position will report directly to the Youth Programs/Day Camp Supervisor. This is a part-time/seasonal position responsible for supervising day camp participants in grades 1st through 6th at our fully outdoor day camp. The day camp counselor will be responsible for overseeing camp activities including, but not limited to group games, arts & crafts, swimming every day, weekly field trips, etc. Most of the day is spent outside at parks.
The Summer working season for this position is: May 28th through August 1st. Typical hours are 6:30am-4:00pm and/or 9:00am-5:45pm, Monday-Friday.
Mandatory Attendance Staff Training Dates: Wednesday, May 28th - Friday, May 30th- Assist with planning daily activities and field trips
- Lead recreational and educational activities (i.e., swimming, arts & crafts, group games, etc.)
- Interact with children while involved in all activities throughout the camp day
- Resolve occasional conflicts between campers and appropriately address behavioral issues
- Assist site supervisors with keeping accurate incident/injury/behavioral logs
- Ensure day camp site is clean and campers do not litter recreational areas or nature
- Communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians and staff regarding rule infractions, questions, and concerns
- Take daily attendance and assist with sign out procedures
- Assist with keeping storage areas clean and organized
- Perform First Aid or take care of minor injuries as needed
- Preferred age is 18 years or older
- Certification in First Aid and/or CPR is preferred
- Successful completion of criminal background check
- Ability to interact well with children ages 5-12 years
- Demonstrate creativity in delivery of sports, group games and arts & crafts activities
- Enjoy working with youth and participating in outdoor/indoor activities
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work well with peers/campers’ parents
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to stand for extended periods of time
- Ability to work in a hot, humid outdoor environment
- Position sometimes requires the ability to lift, push and pull at least 25 lbs.
- Availability to work flexible hours and varied shifts
- Experience working with youth or background in the field of Education, Parks & Recreation or another related field
