Job Description
The Day Camp – Sub Camp Counselor position will report directly to the Youth Enrichment/Day Camp Supervisor. This is a part-time/seasonal position responsible for supervising day camp participants entering grades Kindergarten – 6th at our fully outdoor day camps. The Day Camp – Sub Camp Counselor will be responsible for overseeing camp activities including, but not limited to group games, arts & crafts, swimming once a week, weekly field trips, etc. Most of the day is spent outside at a park. The working season for this position is late May through early August.
Typical hours are 6:30am-3pm, 8:00-4pm or 9:00-5:45pm, Monday-Friday. This position does not have a consistent camp site or schedule. Sub Counselors will be scheduled on an as needed basis, filling in for full time camp counselors who are out of town, on vacation, sick, etc.
Duties/Essential Job Functions
- Assist with planning daily activities and field trips
- Lead recreational and educational activities (i.e., swimming, arts & crafts, group games, etc.)
- Engage with children while involved in all activities throughout the camp day
- Resolve occasional conflicts between campers and appropriately address behavioral issues
- Assist site supervisors with keeping accurate incident/injury/behavioral logs
- Ensure day camp site is clean and campers do not litter recreational areas or nature
- Communicate effectively with participants, parents/guardians and staff regarding rule infractions, questions, and concerns
- Take daily attendance and assist with sign out procedures
- Assist with keeping storage areas clean and organized
- Perform First Aid or take care of minor injuries as needed
Required Knowledge, Skill and Abilities
- Preferred age is 16 years or older
- Certification in First Aid and/or CPR is preferred
- Successful completion of criminal background check
- Ability to interact well with children ages 4-12 years.
- Demonstrate creativity in delivery of sports, group games and arts & crafts activities.
- Enjoy working with youth and participating in outdoor/indoor activities
- Effective communication skills and the ability to work well with peers/campers’ caregivers
Desirable Training and Experience
- Availability to work a flexible schedule with a variety of shifts
- Experience working with preschool, youth or background in the field of Education, Parks & Recreation or another related field.
Job Types: Part-time, Temporary
Pay: $16.00 - $16.75 per hour
Expected hours: 15 – 25 per week
