What are the responsibilities and job description for the Maintenance Specialist I (Parks & Recreation) position at Town of Normal?
Maintains park grounds, right-of-way areas and other Town properties that include amenities such as softball, baseball and soccer fields, tennis, pickleball and basketball courts, playground equipment, drinking fountains, and walking trails.
Performs various landscaping activities such as tree planting, pruning and removal, planting flowers and perennials, weeding, watering, and fertilizing landscape beds, and installing decorative pavers and raised planters.
Assists in turfgrass mowing operations that include park, roadway and municipal property areas utilizing tractors, riding and push mowers, string trimmers, and blowers.
Assists in the performance of building maintenance on park restrooms, picnic shelters, athletic storage sheds, and ballfield dugouts that would include work in carpentry, roofing, electrical and lighting, plumbing, painting, and custodial tasks.
Assists with the installation and maintenance of irrigation systems that includes repairs to controllers, sprinkler heads, values, pumps, and line breaks.
Performs repairs and maintenance at the aquatic centers that include preventative and mechanical tasks to water filtration and pumping systems, water slides and bathhouses.
Assists with the service and maintenance of trucks, tractors, utility vehicles, mowers, and excavation equipment while maintaining up to date equipment preventative maintenance records.
Attends safety training; reads and learns to comply with all safety policies, procedures, practices, programs; uses all equipment and tools in a safe manner; utilizes all safety equipment, clothing, and materials; keeps tools and equipment in good condition, and reports defects to co-workers and supervisors.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Must possess and maintain a valid class “D” Illinois Driver’s License and have ability to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver’s License
Ability to acquire and maintain an Illinois Department of Agriculture Pesticide Operator’s License.
Ability to learn the operation and maintenance procedures of all equipment, including trucks, tractors, loaders, hand and power tools, mowing units, push mowers and string trimmers.
Ability to deal with the public effectively, courteously and tactfully.
Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with co-workers and other Town employees.
Physical ability to perform a wide variety of manual labor in a wide variety of inclement weather, especially as it relates to the back, legs and arms.
Some basic mechanical skills and abilities.
A high school diploma, GED, or other vocational school certification, supplemented by some related maintenance or construction experience is preferred, or any other combination of experience or training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills, and abilities.
