Position Summary: The Department of Public Works – Team Member position involves, but is not limited to, tasks associated with day-to-day maintenance of parks, public rights of way, bridges, limited refuse collection and disposal, recycling, snow removal, fleet management, forestry, park and recreational facilities and drainage. The position is also heavily involved in emergency responses to flooding, snow or other weather-related emergencies, and works closely with all other DPW team members and town entities in responding to both natural and man-made disasters. DPW team members are expected to respond to after hour emergencies and calls for assistance.
Qualifications:
- Knowledge and documented use/training of heavy equipment, commercial and public roadway plowing, wood chippers, payloaders, backhoes, and roadside mowers
- Knowledge and documented use/training of the operation of power tools and power equipment such as lawnmowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, and snow blowers
- Knowledge of federal, state, local, town and other applicable environmental and safety statutes, ordinances, and codes
- Knowledge of Federal (OSHA) and state regulations and town policies regarding safety training and safe work practices
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to work under pressure and/or frequent interruptions
- Ability to work in various conditions such as hot/cold seasons, temperatures, and weather
- High school graduate or equivalent
- Job requires individual to be physically able, on a daily basis, to bend, walk, occasionally lift and carry up to 80lbs.
- The position requires the operation of power tools and equipment, such as mowers, weed trimmers, leaf blowers, snow blowers, etc.
- In addition to the essential duties and responsibilities, the employee will be required to perform any other duties assigned by his or her supervisor.
Necessary Special Requirements:
- A successful candidate must possess and maintain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s Commercial Driver’s License (Class A or B), along with a certified interstate medical card.
Schedule & Compensation:
This is a full-time, 40-hour work week, Monday – Friday position, with overtime as needed/mandated. Competitive wage based on experience/qualifications. Compensation and benefits offered per contract. The successful candidate will become a member of the North Canaan Highway Department, Local 1303-490 of Council 4, AFSCME, AFL-CIO.
