TOWN OF NORTH HEMPSTEAD BAY CONSTABLE-PART TIME
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Patrols local waters and enforces rules and regulations governing boat traffic, fishing, hunting, and construction; performs related duties as required.
COMPLEXITY OF DUTIES Under general supervision, the position requires the use of judgment regarding individual violations and the use of tact in dealing with the public.
TYPICAL DUTIES
1. Patrols waters by boat and checks fishing, hunting, dredging, and construction permits and enforces water safety and conservation laws.
2. Aids and assists distressed boaters and swimmers; administers first aid when necessary.
3. Takes fish, wildlife, and boat census figures.
4. Photographs and documents evidence of all violations.
5. Maintains an accurate log book.
6. Conducts classes on Boat Safety.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
1. Considerable knowledge of all rules and regulations governing the use of local waters.
2. Ability to enforce compliance with established rules and regulations.
3. Ability to operate a powered marine vessel.
4. Ability to administer first aid.
5. Ability to perform elementary arithmetic and keep accurate records.
6. Ability to teach others in the safe operation of power boats.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Training and Experience
Graduation from high school and Two years of satisfactory experience in the operation of motor boats.
Necessary Special Requirement
Proof of possession of a Coast Guard Certificate indicating successful completion of the basic boating skills and seamanship course.
NOTE: Experience, as outlined above, in excess of two-year requirement, may be substituted for high school education on a year-for-year basis up to a maximum of two years.
Applicant Must possess: A) Active Peace Officer Status NYS; B) Valid NY State Driver's License C) The ability to operate Personal Water Craft and water vessels up to 32' in length; D) NYS Boating Safety Certificate; E) must be proficient swimmer; F) must have the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays
