JOB DESCRIPTION
Summary/Objective
This is a seasonal position, starting in June and ending in August, with 30-38 hours per week. Working under the direction of the OCC Director/Program Coordinator, the Summer Program Coordinator will lead the planning, organization, and implementation of all summer program activities. They will supervise, monitor, and participate (when needed) in all activities including field trips, arts and crafts, sports, and games. While doing so, the coordinator is expected to serve as an appropriate role model for the children under their care and counselors under their supervision.
Responsibilities
Present professional appearance and attitude at all times and maintain a high standard of customer service.- Lead team training and meetings
- Enforcement of recreational rules and regulations established by the Town of Oxford.
- Guide individual participants and groups in all program activities
- Supervise all aspects of the program
- Help set up program location prior to opening for the season and clean up and store everything at the close of the season.
- Teach or lead activities as assigned
- Maintain good public relations with participants’ parents/guardians and the general public
- Set a good example for counselors/participants and others including cleanliness, punctuality, reliability, sharing clean-up responsibilities, and good sportsmanship.
- Work with head lifeguard to ensure proper monitoring of the Splash Pad
- Properly address behavioral issues with children and parents in a positive and constructive manner
- Maintain discipline logs and adhere to the discipline plan outlined in the participants’ code of conduct. Report all incidents/accidents to OCC Director/Program Coordinator in a timely manner.
- Supervise and log self-administration of any daily medications required by participants.
- Maintain confidentiality of staff, program participants, and visitors.
- Other reasonable duties may be assigned as required by the OCC Director/Program Coordinator
Supervisory Responsibility
Responsible for direct supervision of up to 7 Summer Program Counselors and 2 monitors
Work Environment:
Counselors are required to work at a freshwater lakefront where they are exposed to inclement weather conditions, often with insufficient protection from the sun. Hazards may be presented by naturally occurring and regularly changing conditions such as water temperature, debris, and uneven sand.
Physical Demands:
- Ability to push, pull, or lift 20 pounds (frequently), 50 pounds (occasionally), up to 100 pounds (rarely).
- Ability to stand or sit for long periods of time in varying outside air temperatures and climate conditions.
- Must have sufficient hearing to perform the duties of the job.
- While performing duties of this job, employees are occasionally required to climb or balance; jump, stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Ability to walk, run, jump, or stand on uneven terrain.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work
Seasonal Part time 30-40 hours per week, including weekends.

Required Education and Experience
- Associate’s degree in education preferred.
- 18 years of age or older.
- Proven experience as Camp Counselor or similar role working with children.
- Strong leadership and supervisory skills
- Familiarity with various outdoor activities
- Patient and reliable
- Exceptional organizational and communication skills required.
- Must enjoy working with children.
- Ability to accept supervision and guidance.
- Ability to lead and teach activities.
- Good integrity, character, attitude, and adaptability
- Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience, and self-control
- Energetic and positive personality
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the job (strength and stamina to follow strenuous activities like hiking, running, crouching, or carrying children)
- First aid- and CPR-certified preferred
- High school diploma
- You will need to pass a drug or background test according to local laws.
- Availability to work the entire period of the summer program is preferred. Must disclose during the interview process if a vacation or other prolonged absence has been planned.
