GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the direction of the Utilities Superintendent, the Groundwater Operator is responsible for assisting in the day-to-day operations of the groundwater plants and distributions system to include but not limited to assisting in monitoring, maintaining, and repairing all aspects of the groundwater plant facilities, and daily inspections of water wells.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Reports to the Supervisor and Utilities Superintendent.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Exercises autonomy and sound judgement over tasks.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Repairs water leaks on mains, service lines, meters, and valves. Installs or replaces meters, water taps, water lines, valves, and service lines.
- Performs Groundwater production duties at public water systems and water wells for the city.
- Collect samples to test and monitor disinfection residuals.
- Adjust and maintain disinfection system equipment and other chemical feed system to meet water quality standards.
- Perform proper disinfection procedures after new line installation / leak repairs / equipment repairs / tank maintenance.
- Repair, replace, maintain, tap or extended piping and valves within the production system.
- Investigate and make system adjustments to resolve customer's water quality problems and prevent / reduce biofilm.
- Locate and exercise valves within the production system.
- Monitor and adjust storage Tank water age / disinfection residuals.
- Identify and correct cross-connections.
- Monitor and adjust distribution system pressure / repair and adjust pumps and related equipment
- Collect bacteriological samples for compliance and identify sanitary defects.
- Knowledge in applicable principals, policies and procedures related to assigned are of responsibilities.
- Knowledge in basic mathematics.
- Ability to achieve levels of performance using tools and machinery.
- Inspects, maintains, and performs skilled repairs on water distribution and collection system and equipment; work might involve identifying and troubleshooting applicable systems and equipment and ensuring compliance with applicable polices and procedures.
- Provides customer service by aiding and information to the public, vendors, and other internal / external departments or agencies.
- Drives utility trucks, hauling equipment and materials to job sites.
- Run heavy & light equipment (backhoe, mowers, packers, and tractors, etc.)
- Must possess mobility to work in the field; strength, stamina, and mobility to perform medium to heavy physical work, to work in confined spaces, around machines, and to climb and descend ladders, and to operate varied hand and power tools and construction equipment; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone or radio.
- Prepares, maintains, updates records, reports, logs, check list, service orders and other documentation.
- The job involves fieldwork requiring frequent walking in operational areas to identify problems or hazards.
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED
Personal computer, including word processor, spreadsheets, project management software, 10-key calculator, phone, copy machine, fax machine, etc. Tools and equipment to repair and maintain water and water well systems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Working conditions are in an office and field environment. Field environment working conditions include frequent exposure to inclement weather; wastewater; mechanical, electrical, chemical, and confined space hazards; offensive fumes; excessive noise; heavy traffic; deep excavations; and animals, snakes, and poisonous insects. May be required to comply with requirements as specified in applicable regulations for personal protective equipment, including clearance for use of respiratory protection and other associated equipment. Positions in this classification bend, stoop, kneel, reach, and climb to perform work and inspect work sites. Employees must possess the ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects up to 100 pounds and heavier weights with the use of proper equipment. May operate a company vehicle.
