Water Aerobics Instructor

Compensation: $35.00 per hour

Position Summary: We are looking for instructors who can bring creativity, enthusiasm, and positive energy to our pool activities!Instructors are responsible for developing and conducting different types of aquatic aerobics classes that can be modified for all skill levels. Instructors will also ensure personal safety and a positive growth experience for all patrons.
Essential Functions:
- Create and lead effective workouts using music, equipment (i.e. water weights, noodles), and techniques that keep participants engaged and excited, regardless of skill level.
- Lead class from water, deck, or combination of both.
- Willingness to innovate and experiment with new formats, music, and equipment.
- Get to know your participants and modification needs. Greet them by name and introduce new members.
- Create a safe and comfortable environment for participants to ask for modification and to ask questions. Provide guidance and feedback as needed to participants.
- Set music volume at a safe and appropriate level for the program (no one will be given ear plugs).
- Set up and break down any equipment needed for the program.
- Keep the Aquatics Coordinator informed of facility, program, or equipment needs or concerns.
- Maintain good attendance and communicate respectfully with the Aquatics Coordinator in a timely manner (a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice) regarding any need for time off.
- Assume total responsibility for obtaining qualified substitutes when needed and be available to substitute for other instructors. Communicate any changes with the Aquatics Coordinator in a timely manner.
- Occasionally assist in special events or classes to promote group water exercise.
- Work and communicate with the Aquatics Coordinator on development and schedule of programs a minimum of 3 months prior to each session start date.
- Prepare and complete accident/incident reports during emergency situations and notify the Aquatics Coordinator and Director of all emergencies immediately.
- Complete regular monitoring and cleaning up for equipment used for classes/programs to ensure proper maintenance and safety of environment.
- Maintain attendance logs and records of activities.
- Maintain all certifications required by the Town of Plainfield.
- Must be able to recognize and respond to emergency situations, perform emergency care, and contact emergency assistance when required.
- Report to work 15 minutes prior to the start of scheduled hours appropriately dressed and ready to work.
- Present a professional manner at all times.
- Verbally communicate with patrons, and other employees/supervisors in the department and Town Hall in a respectful and professional manner.
- Work effectively both independently and as a team member and demonstrate a positive attitude.
- All other job duties as assigned.
Requirements:
- National certification (ACE, NETA, AEA, AAAI/ISMA, AFAA, ASFA, AFAA, NASM, etc.) for water aerobics instruction.
- Group fitness/exercise certification preferred.
- Possess and maintain CPR/First Aid/AED certifications.
- Must be 16 years old or older.
- Must have reliable transportation.
- 1 year teaching experience preferred.
- Lifeguard Certification is preferred although not required.
Working conditions and Physical Demands:
- Work is performed in an indoor heated aquatic environment.
- Employees are required to be able to balance, bend, stoop, climb stairs, lift and/or move up to 25 lbs.
- Ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
- Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency. Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
