You can earn up to $15.50 per hour as a Lifeguard this Summer!

- $1 an hour increase when working on Saturday or Sunday 

- $1 an hour increase when working from Memorial Day to Labor Day

The Lifeguard is responsible for everyday operational tasks at Plainfield Aquatic Center indoor and/or outdoor operations. Responsibilities include but are not limited to lifeguarding, participant safety, maintaining skills and working at other Plainfield Parks and Recreation facilities as needed.

Seasonal Lifeguards are required to be available a minimum of 25 hours per week but can work up to 40 hours  per week during the season.

If you are selected for employment, you MUST attend one onboarding!

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  1. Aquatic Risk Management:  Lifeguarding; scanning assigned zones of protection, patron rule enforcement, proper time management of rotations and providing safety assistance, rescues, emergency actions and first aid when necessary, according to the Town of Plainfield and Jeff Ellis and Associates Risk Management protocol.   Immediately reports any hazardous conditions to supervisor including inability to properly scan zone due to weather or other conditions.  Will maintain minimum number of in-service hours required by the department.
  2. Aquatic Facility Maintenance and Operations:   Will assist with cleaning and policing grounds, pool deck and bathhouse facilities.  May assist with answering phones, communication with vendors, employees, and customer service. May also assist with pool vacuuming and special event equipment set-up and tear-down, involving lifting and/or other labor-intensive duties.  
  3. Personnel:  May assist with supervision of volunteers and or program participants.
  4. Programming:  May assist with teaching, coaching, or assisting with lessons, swim team and other programs and special events at location in accordance with town affiliated and authorized instructional guidelines and protocol.  
  5. Documentation:  May assist with water testing, accident reports, program registrations and other operational reports and records.
  6. Policy and Procedure:  Follows all policies and procedures as described in the Town of Plainfield employee manual and all other town and department protocols, policies and guidelines including those outlined by Ellis and Associates Risk Management standards and other affiliated organizational values and protocols.
  7. Other related duties as assigned.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience: Must be able to obtain a Jeff Ellis Lifeguard Certification and/or a Jeff Ellis Swimming Instructor Certification provided free of charge by the Town of Plainfield. College experience preferred. At least one (1) year of aquatic/lifeguarding experience required.

 

Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.

  • Computer software skills desired include: Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Rec Trac.
  • The ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment within established protocols and guidelines is required.
  • The ability to develop and maintain a comprehensive knowledge of current principles, codes, and safety protocols and risk management relating to recreation facility operation and programs is required.
  • The ability to enforce rules and follow all established protocols and guidelines is required.
  • The ability to demonstrate satisfactory performance ratings on all safety and operational audits including program instructional audits is required.
  • The ability to follow instructions regarding the use of pool chemicals is required.
  • The ability to operate water analysis equipment to ensure proper water chemistry is required.
  • A working knowledge of the maintenance and repair of pool equipment is desired.
  • The ability to resolve conflicts between employees and between employees and guests is required.
  • The ability remain current with all required licenses, certifications and in-service requirements is required.
  • First Aid, AED, and CPR certifications are required.
  • The ability to operate a computer, printer, copy machine, scanner, fax machine, and other office equipment is required.
  • The ability to speak, read and write in English is required. Spanish is desired.
  • Basic understanding of swimming, aquatic programming and waterpark amenities and operations.
  • Ability to make sound and rational decisions including exercising independent judgment.
  • Must maintain a positive attitude and uphold PARKS values at all times.
  • Must be a good role model and mentor for lifeguards on shift.
  • Must have flexibility in daily job duties, as we operate in the ever-changing aquatic industry.
  • Must be able to respond with leadership to all medical emergencies throughout facility.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision (clear vision at 20 inches or less), distance vision (clear vision at 20 feet or more), color vision (ability to identify and distinguish colors), peripheral vision (ability to observe an area that can be seen up and down or to the left and right while eyes are fixed on a given point), depth perception (three-dimensional vision, ability to judge distances and spatial relationships), and the ability to adjust focus (ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus).

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is exposed to wet or humid conditions (non-weather); fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; and outdoor weather conditions. The employee frequently is exposed to work near moving mechanical parts; and extreme heat (non-weather). The employee occasionally is exposed to work in high, precarious places; extreme cold (non-weather); and the risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud.

 

While the Aquatics Center is usually open from 5:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. both for indoor year-round operations and seasonal outdoor operations, this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends.

Salary : $14 - $22
