What are the responsibilities and job description for the Wastewater Treatment Crew Leader position at Town of Plainfield?
The Wastewater Treatment Crew Leader is responsible for providing support to the Wastewater Utility Manager, assisting in the coordination of the day-to-day operations of the Wastewater Treatment Division.
Duties include, but are not limited to:- Assists the Wastewater Utility Manager in the organizing and scheduling of work activities to include: the assignment of personnel, and the determination of equipment and materials needed to complete the job and/or project.
- Operates and maintains the wastewater Treatment system, treatment plants, and lift stations to include all efforts required to meet all established regulations.
- Plans, schedules, and implements construction, maintenance, and operational activities designed to improve wastewater distribution and treatment services for the Town.
- Oversees the analysis of wastewater, sludge, and effluent samples to provide data for the efficient operation of the Wastewater Treatment Plant.
- Maintains the inventory and use of materials, supplies, and equipment used in the maintenance, construction, and the repair of facilities.
- Oversees inspections of treatment facility equipment and processes for compliance with regulations and requirements.
- Participates in the scheduling and coordination of the repair of equipment and systems to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functional.
- Enforces rules, government regulations, policies, and procedures relating to the operation of department systems to include sanitary sewers, the Wastewater Treatment Plant, and solid waste.
- Ensures compliance with the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit issued by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM).
- Conducts strategic statistical, economic and operational evaluations of system operations and facilities.
- Completes administrative duties to include attending meetings, reviewing reports, completing various reports, answering inquiries, etc., as needed.
- Performs general building and grounds maintenance.
- Assists other departments, as needed.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises the Wastewater Treatment Operators. Employee carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Education and/or Experience: Associate’s degree from a College or University; and four years’ experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Class IV Wastewater Operators license issued by the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) treatment job is required. Previous supervisory experience is also required. Other Skills and Abilities: The following skills and abilities are either required or desired.
- Computer software skills required include Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, MUNIS and Project Management software.
- Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is required when towing trailers.
- A working knowledge of the regulations, theory and processes of modern wastewater distribution is required.
- A working knowledge of laboratory testing and certification of the machines is required.
- The ability to use specialized tools, equipment, and machines to include gauge, calipers, recorders, pitot tubes, calculators, leak detection equipment, pipe locating equipment, meter testing equipment, transit, valve machines, tapping machines, water main sectional maps, saws, cutters, air compressors, loaders, and backhoes is required.
- A working knowledge of the chemical and physical processes involved in treatment is required.
- A working knowledge of the mechanical and hydraulic engineering principles involved in plant operation is required.
- The ability to detect flows in the operation of mechanical equipment and to determine proper remedial actions is required.
- A comprehensive knowledge of the geography of the Town is required.
- The ability to enforce rules and follow all established protocols and guidelines is required.
- The ability to adapt and conform to shifting priorities and demands and execute accordingly.
- The ability to maintain cooperative relationships with the Town officials and with the general public is required.
- The ability to attend meetings and seminars is required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to very loud.
While the offices of the Wastewater Distribution Department are usually open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., this position may require work beyond these hours and on the weekends. It also requires the ability to drive Wastewater Distribution Department vehicles. Thus, a valid driver’s license is required.
