Positions assigned to this class are responsible for performing technical work locating, identifying and marking underground utilities using blueprints and electronic equipment.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Examples of Duties
- Performs work orders related to locating and identifying water, sewer and cable utilities; determines what type of materials, paints, flags, spikes, or stake markers are required to complete marking; does research for maps and improvements.
- Completes work order data and blue stake sheets; prioritizes, verifies, collects data, ensures process is completed using standard operating procedures and determines what information needs to be distributed to other departments or entities.
- Operates and maintains a variety of hand and/or power tools, which includes GPS unit, wire line locator, metal detector; and/or other equipment.
- Performs mapping GIS and GPS updates and edits in collaboration with applicable internal department(s).
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment; reports any concerns in a timely manner.
- Participates in on-call program.
- Assists other utility crews (repair, meter, inspection) as needed.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Typical Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED, 1 year of specialized training and experience, and 2 years of utility locating experience; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Driver's License;
- Arizona Department of Environmental Quality (ADEQ) Grade I Water Distribution Systems Operator Certification (or obtain within 6 months of hire date for water employees);
- Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry.
- Water lines, sewer, and electrical systems and the regulating standards;
- Utility locating requirements and standards, and operation of associated equipment;
- Arizona blue stake rules and regulations;
- Reading blueprints, as-builts, construction plans and maps;
- Basic knowledge of electricity;
- Standard office equipment including the computer and programs relevant to the performance of applicable duties and responsibilities;
- Water, sewer, irrigation, communication, electric and traffic signals construction;
- Occupational hazards and safe work practices.
- Operating hand and power tools, light equipment such as GPS unit, line locator and metal detector;
- Performing various levels of comprehension and mathematical skills;
- Reading and locating blueprints, reading maps;
- Understanding and operating measuring devices;
- Using computers and related software applications;
- Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, and other interested parties sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction.
