JOB CLASSIFICATION SUMMARY
Positions assigned to this class are responsible for performing skilled activities and operate heavy equipment related to installation, maintenance, and repair on a variety of Town utility equipment, structures, and apparatuses in support of the Town's water and wastewater systems.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
This is a fully qualified level utilities maintenance/trades classification in the utilities maintenance and operations job family where tasks and assignments are performed using a variety of procedures and techniques. This is the experienced/journey level that is fully competent in the technical/functional aspects of sewer utilities. Work usually involves the application of sound technical principles and best practices associated with planning, diagnosis, troubleshooting and problem solving. Incumbents perform varied assignments requiring journey level knowledge in sewer utilities.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The following are intended to describe core work functions of this classification. While the level and broad nature of essential duties may not change, specific work tasks will vary over time depending on the Town’s needs.
- Responds to emergency situations such as system overflows or blockages.
- Sets up traffic controls.
- Operates, maintains, and repairs a variety of hand, power tools, welding equipment, trucks, tractors, heavy equipment, and/or a variety of other light equipment.
- Operates heavy construction equipment which will vary depending on assigned area. Equipment may include but is not limited to backhoes, graders, front-end loaders, forklifts, street sweepers, large trucks, sewer combination cleaners, arena grooming equipment, skid steer, dump truck, water truck, vacuum truck and gang mowers for a variety of construction and maintenance operations involving streets, wastewater systems, and park maintenance.
- Maintains the integrity of the wastewater system to protect public health and the environment.
- Performs various tasks associated with wastewater collection system maintenance projects; inspects collection lines using camera/televising equipment; cleans and maps collection lines; repairs main lines, lateral lines, and utility access holes; contains and cleans up sanitary sewer overflows; installs sewer lines; inspects new construction; inspects collection utility access holes; applies insecticide to utility access holes.
- Conducts site inspections.
- Maintains written work records, including complaint resolution, maintenance and repair logs, flow records, and daily work logs.
- Responds to emergency situations during regular work hours and when on call; determines what equipment and personnel are needed to handle emergency situation.
- Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment; reports any concerns in a timely manner.
- Performs related work as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (at job entry)
Education and Experience:
High School Diploma or GED and 3 years of related experience; or an equivalent combination of directly related education and experience.
LICENSING/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
- Driver's License;
- Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Grade I Water Distribution Systems Operator Certification;
- Arizona Department of Environmental Quality Grade I Wastewater Collection Systems Operator Certification;
- Successful completion of the MSA SCBA test;
- Commercial Driver's License with tanker endorsement required within 6 months of hire.
- Maintain all certifications/licenses required at job entry.
KNOWLEDGE
- Wastewater methods, materials, tools and standard practices for the installation, maintenance, operation, repair, and inspections of the water and wastewater distribution/collection system;
- Standard office equipment including the computer and programs relevant to the performance of applicable duties and responsibilities;
- Applicable hand and power tools utilized in the performance of work;
- Applicable equipment utilized in the performance of work;
- Heavy equipment operations;
- Utility operations in assigned area of responsibility;
- Utility preventative maintenance procedures and techniques;
- Basic inventory principles and practices.
