Middle School Camp Head Counselor
General Statement of Duties
The Middle School Camp Head Counselor plays a key leadership role in ensuring a safe, positive, and engaging experience for all campers. This person will attend all scheduled off-site field trips supervise assistant counselors, and lead activities. They serve as the first point of contact for camper concerns and help maintain a fun, inclusive, and structured environment.
Essential Responsibilities
- Attend and actively participate in all scheduled field trips (schedule varies within an 8 AM – 3 PM timeframe).
- Facilitate all before- and after-trip activities ensuring structured and engaging programming.
- Supervise and support assistant counselor ensuring they fulfill daily responsibilities.
- Engage with campers to foster positive relationships and ensure no child feels left out.
- Monitor and address camper or counselor concerns, resolving issues promptly.
- Communicate with the Parks & Recreation Manager regarding any incidents or concerns.
- Ensure camper safety by enforcing rules, supervising activities, and following emergency procedures.
- Take accurate attendance at the start of each day, before and after field trips, and at the end of the day.
- Remain with all participants until every camper has been picked up.
- Complete and submit accident/incident reports in accordance with policy.
- Lead by example with enthusiasm, patience, and a team-first attitude.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with children in a camp, school, or recreational setting preferred.
- Leadership experience (supervising staff, leading activities, managing group dynamics).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills to engage with campers, parents, and staff.
- Ability to problem-solve and stay calm in high-energy or unexpected situations.
- Excellent time management and organizational skills.
- Flexibility and adaptability to adjust to schedule changes or unexpected situations.
Supervision Received
- Reports directly to the Parks & Recreation Manager. Works under the general direction of the Director of Community Services.
Salary:
$23.00 Commensurate with experience.
Weekly Hours: 18 hours/week (Typically Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday’s 8:30 am – 2:30 pm but may vary based on trips and needed rain dates)
