What are the responsibilities and job description for the Public Works Sanitation Attendant (Part-Time, Day-Time) position at Town of Signal Mountain?
Employee manages daily operations of the transfer station and/or recycle center to provide a clean, efficient, and friendly location for citizens to dispose of recyclable and waste materials. This position is under the supervision of the Environmental Manager.

Essential Functions of the Job:
Essential functions are fundamental job duties. They do not include marginal tasks, which are also performed but are not incidental to the primary functions. - Assist citizens with drop-offs; answer questions concerning waste items.
- Ensure items are put in correct containers.
- Operate backhoe and solid waste compactor.
- Collect and receipt fees for building materials and other items dumped at the transfer station.
- Keep drop-off center clean; other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of departmental functions, rules, regulations and procedures.
- Knowledge of waste disposal processes.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards, safety standards and precautions.
- Ability to carry out routine written and oral instructions.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees and the general public.
Equipment:
Backhoe and solid waste compactor (will train). Various hand tools including rakes, shovels, and leaf blowers.
Educational Requirements:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience Required:
No related experience required. Driver’s license valid in the State of Tennessee.
Problem Solving Requirements:
Carry out routine tasks using the backhoe to ensure the household trash hopper is free of blockages and clogs. Use of basic math skills to calculate fees and the correct amount of change for residents and non-residents who have paid to dump their building materials.
Writing Skills Required:
Fill out accurate receipts for waste disposal fees.
Speaking/Presentation Skills Required:
Communicate standard information regarding fees, proper disposal of different materials, and answer visitor questions.
