Laboratory Assistant I

GENERAL DEFINITION AND CONDITIONS OF WORK:

An employee in this classperforms intermediate semiskilled work maintaining treatment plant records, collecting samples and assisting with testing in a water or wastewater treatment facility; does related work as required. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Laboratory Supervisor.

This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently; work requires climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception and color perception; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and detailed or loud talking to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, use of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arm’s length; operation of machines, operation of motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities; work requires frequent exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals; work occasionally requires exposure to working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and vibration; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office with typewriters and/or computer printers, light traffic).

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/TYPICAL TASKS:

Taking samples; assisting with testing; maintaining records and files; preparing reports.

Collects daily samples from various locations.

Records plant temperatures, PH, flow, D.O., and other readings from various meters.

Calibrates testing equipment.

Performs laboratory tests; prepares and reads bacteriological tests; prepares bacteriological growth medium and titration chemicals.

Maintains log of all reagents used daily; maintains chemical inventories.

Cleans and sterilizes glassware and other laboratory equipment; maintains appearance of laboratory.

Answers phones.

Performs related tasks as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

General knowledge of principles, practices and techniques of chemistry and microbiology; general knowledge of applicable local, State and Federal regulations; general knowledge in preparing reports and maintaining records; general knowledge in the use of standard office equipment and associated software; general knowledge in the use of SCADA and graphing software; general knowledge in the use of laboratory and related equipment to compute and record test results; skill in taking samples for testing of wastewater; ability to make arithmetic computations; ability to compute rates, ratios, and percentages; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Possession of a valid North Carolina driver’s license upon hire.

Ability to obtain North Carolina Class “C” Surface Water Treatment Operator or Grade I Wastewater Treatment Operator certification within one year of employment.

Must meet and maintain all certification, license and training requirements for position.

This position reports to TriRivers WWTP lab at 5327 Iron Furnace Road, Sanford NC 27330.
