Description

PAY & BENEFITS :

Full Range : $43,721 - $66,194 ($22.42 - $33.95 / hr)

In addition to the base salary, this full-time position is eligible for an annual performance bonus as well as a longevity bonus.

Description :

The purpose of this classification is to perform and assist with inspecting, diagnosing issues, repairing, and performing routine maintenance on vehicles by identifying problems, operating computerized diagnostic equipment, replacing faulty parts, and ensuring proper functionality of systems. Additional responsibilities include maintaining the vehicle maintenance parts inventory system and assisting with additional duties around the shop. Duties and responsibilities include performing tests, mechanical repair, coordinating the parts inventory system, processing invoices for payment, transporting vehicles, and performing general cleaning / maintenance around the shop. Under general supervision, reports to Fleet Manager.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

The following duties are normal for this position.   • Performs and / or assists Heavy Equipment Mechanic(s) in performing mechanical repair, maintenance, and preventive maintenance work; performs and / or assists in inspecting, testing, and / or repairing engine components and systems, such as steering systems, suspension systems, hydraulic systems, brake systems, drive train systems, engine cooling systems, fuel systems, charging systems, starting systems, inflatable restraint systems, heating / air conditioning systems, power windows, lighting systems, or horns.
  • Monitors inventory of department equipment, parts, tires, tools, and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities; initiates requests for new / replacement materials; picks up / delivers materials as needed.
  • Operates a variety of machinery, equipment, and tools associated with repairing, maintaining, and testing vehicles and equipment, which may include a service truck, various standard / emergency vehicles, various trucks and heavy equipment, vehicle lift, tire changer, battery charger, hydraulic jack, air compressor, pressure washer, generator, diagnostic instruments, or mechanic tools.
  • Tests vehicles, machinery, equipment, and parts for proper operations.
  • Coordinate and monitors inventory of department equipment, parts, tires, tools and supplies; ensures availability of adequate materials to conduct work activities. Initiates request for new / replacement materials; picks up / delivers materials as needed.
  • Place orders for equipment, parts, tires tools, and supplies. When necessary will go retrieve items from stores.
  • Assists with transport of vehicles needing repairs or returning vehicles after repairs are completed.
  • Performs general cleaning / maintenance tasks necessary to keep tools / replacing fluids, washing / cleaning vehicles and equipment, or cleaning shop / work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment.
  • Follows safety procedures, utilizes safety equipment, and monitors work environment to ensure safety of employees and other individuals; reports accidents and incidents.
  • Accurately completes required paperwork i.e. bills, logs, work orders etc. in a timely manner.
  • Maintains records in compliance to Federal, State, and City regulations
  • Works safely observing all OSHA, Federal, State and City regulations. Report any accidents immediately to Manager.
  • Correctly wears appropriate personal protective equipment when required.
  • Run, maneuver, navigate, or drive vehicles or mechanized equipment, such as forklifts, passenger vehicles, or machinery.
  • Repair defective engines or engine components.
  • Replace worn, damaged, or defective mechanical parts.

  • Install vehicle parts or accessories.
  • Troubleshoot fuel, ignition, and emissions control systems, using electronic test equipment.
  • Test electronic computer components in automobiles to ensure proper operation.
  • Help maintain the cleanliness of machines, work area, and facility. Report any incidents or malfunctioning equipment to the supervisor.
  • Any other duties as assigned by Fleet Manager.

  • Pneumatic Impact Wrenches - Air wrenches; Butterfly air wrenches; Pneumatic wrenches.
  • Pneumatic Vacuum Equipment - Brake bleeders; Hydraulic bleed tools; Pneumatic fluid evacuators; Pressure brake bleeders
  • Pullers - Gear pullers; Hand pullers; Power pullers; Slide hammers
  • Specialty Wrenches - Breaker bars; Clutch wrenches; Oil filter wrenches; Ratcheting gear wrenches
  • Voltage or Current Meters - Alternator testers; In-line ignition spark testers; Spark plug testers; Voltmeters
  • Minimum Qualifications

  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must have high school diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid Tennessee Driver's License with satisfactory driving record.
  • Must obtain your CDL within a 6 month period after employment begins
  • Must be able to properly wear mandatory safety equipment
  • Must have two (2) years previous experience in mechanical repairs, ½ ton to 1 ton vehicles, or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.

    Data Utilization : Must be able to effectively evaluate, audit, deduce, or utilize a wide variety of data and information using established criteria to include; blueprints, plans, and work orders.

Must be able to conduct oneself with professionalism and tact in interacting with citizens, organizations, as well as other Town employees. Must be able to establish / maintain effective working relations with others

    Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Material Utilization : Must be familiar with the mechanical workings of various machines and tools used in equipment maintenance and repair and have the dexterity necessary to operate the following : lifts, air tools, brake lathe, wheel balancer, tire machine, arc welders, grinders, radio, and general hand tools; town vehicle.

    Verbal Aptitude : Ability to express ideas and information clearly, concisely, and effectively both orally and in writing.

    Mathematical Aptitude : Must have good mathematical aptitude. Required abilities include adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals, computing rate, ratio, and percent, the ability to interpret data in various forms such as graphs, charts, etc.

    Functional Reasoning : Comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of vehicle maintenance and mechanics. Must be able to carry out instructions provided in written, schematic, blueprint, and verbal form; to exercise independent judgment to adopt or modify methods and standards to meet variations in assigned objectives.

    Situational Reasoning : Requires the ability to exercise good judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions. Requires the ability to assess situations and make decisions accordingly. Position requires the ability to multi-task.

    ADA COMPLIANCE

    Physical Ability : Must have the dexterity and fitness sufficient to safely and proficiently operate, utilize, and maintain equipment and tools related to tasks. Must be able to stand, bend, climb, stoop, crawl, stretch, walk, and lift 50 lbs. or at times greater weights. Must be able to exit and enter a vehicle on a regular basis.

    Sensory Requirements : Must have sufficient vision and hearing to read, gather information, and generally interact with people.

    Environmental Factors : Working conditions are field environment with constant exposure to noise and dust and some exposure to heat, cold, and rain. Work environment can be dirty with unpleasant odors accompanied by exposure to carbon monoxide fumes. Generally physical and working conditions are such that minor cuts, abrasions, bruises, or burns may be encountered with various jobs.
