Description:
The purpose of this classification is to operate heavy equipment, drive large trucks/vehicles, maintenance and repair activities; perform a variety of semi-skilled tasks and work associated with road surface construction, road maintenance, or other projects/activities for the Town of Smyrna. Duties and responsibilities include operating larger vehicles, maintaining equipment and vehicles, hauling or transporting materials, performing road surface, right-of-way, and drainage system construction/maintenance tasks, or performing other tasks as assigned. Under minimal supervision, reports to Public Works Superintendent.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
The following duties are normal for this position. - Operates trucks of various sizes and weights in the load, hauling and unloading of various equipment, materials and supplies. Monitors status of materials under transport and retrieves any fallen debris/materials
- Operates on a regular basis a variety of trucks and equipment such as bulldozer, backhoes, graders, asphalt maintainers, roller compacters, loader / excavator to perform functions of Public Works.
- Provides traffic control in Town work zones.
- May perform manual labor to include shoveling and looping of asphalt, salting streets and parking lots grading and patching roads, shoveling rock/dirt, digging holes and trenches, or shoveling other materials
- Assists in the repair and new construction of drainage easements.
- Helps to maintain shop area and other work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Leads, directs, mentors, and advises less skilled workers in the performance of Public Works duties, when directed by Public Works Superintendent.
- Operates knuckle boom truck for pick up of limbs and brush. Delivers to designated location for disposal. Burns limbs in accordance to procedures established.
- Maintains records in compliance to Federal, State, and Town regulations.
- Performs general cleaning/maintenance tasks necessary to keep vehicles, equipment, and tools in operable condition, which may include inspecting equipment, checking fluid levels, washing/cleaning equipment, or cleaning shop/work areas; monitors equipment operations to maintain efficiency and safety; reports faulty equipment; reports any issues to Supervisor/Manager.
- Any other duties as assigned by Manager.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- Must have a high school diploma or GED.
- Must possess a valid Tennessee Drivers License with a satisfactory driving record
- Must have or obtain a CDL within 6 months of hire
- Must possess one (1) year of experience involving the use of medium and heavy equipment.
- Must possess four (4) years of experience and working knowledge pertaining to all aspects of Public Works including paving, drainage systems, right-of-way maintenance, and equipment operation.
- OR any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job.
- Previous experience in shooting grade elevations preferred
- Must obtain fork truck certification within 6 months of hire
- Previous experience in shooting grade elevations preferred
- Must be able to properly wear mandatory safety equipment
